Part 1: Pre-history • The Thai Internet also grew out from the UNIX based educational community in the late 80's. • While the majority of the people were using PC and DOS, a few UNIX machines in Thailand located in Songkhla, Pathumthani and Bangkok were busy talking to one another with the Australian ACSnet (UUCP-like)..

  3. Several struggles • Other initiatives • X25 project by NECTEC • Libraries uses X29 provided by CAT • BITNET at AIT

  4. Working condition • No PABX • Poor telephone lines • X29 -- VT100 ==> mailboxes in Norway, Melbourne and Tokyo

  5. CAT X 29: bootstrap UUCP Kanchana called U of Melbourne’s X25 , used munnari.oz and with KRE (kanchana) Tomonori Kimura called U of Tokyo, used U of Tokyo mailbox and worked with Jun (tomonori Kimura) Fin Augesen called U of Tronhiem U of Tronhiem and U of Melbourne were working on X.400

  6. Part 2: UUCP • In late 1987, as soon as AIT received its first SUN workstation, purchased by a Japanese grant, it was immediately set up to connect to UUNET and munnari.oz by UUCP. • .th TLD was registered and AIT's IP addresses applied for in 1988.

  7. News at that time • NSF may fund a half circuit to AIT to connect with remote sensing people • Name like Steve Goldstein was mentioned

  8. ACSnet • Australian IDP donated ACSnet to Prince of Songkhla University (VAX) , July or August1987 • Professor Juris Reinfeld and Robert Elz • Chula (VAX) , AIT (SUN) , Thammasart-Rangsit (NCR) • Two gateways: AIT and PSU • AIT calls UUNET but Melbourne Uni calls AIT for ACSnet

  9. For AIT • We became gateway between UUCP and ACSnet • Chula and AIT called one another every 15 minutes • Munnari called AIT to pick up mbox • AIT still calls UUNET, U of Tokyo and sometimes INRIA

  10. Soon after that, the Thai CS network was set up using ACSnet software donated by the Australian government linking three active institutions: AIT, Prince of Songkhla Universityand Chulalongkorn University

  11. People • AIT -- Tomonori Kimura and Kanchana • Chula -- Yunyong Teng-Amnuay • PSU -- Aj. Vuthipong and Nittida • + 2nd generation technical people -- Pensri (AIT) , Passakorn (Chula)

Part 3: reaching out in 1991 • soc.culture.thai, set up by Nittida Nuansri at U of Melbourne provided a meeting place where we met Trin Tansetthi, Thaweesak etc.. • membership strategy: encouraged new comers to set up own node --> Thaweesak Koanantrakool of Thammasart U, Kraisorn Jitthorntham, Chaingmai University • Networking Workshop at AIT in December, 1991

All key players of the Thai Internet had its first meeting at AIT in December 1991to agree to cooperate for the development of the Internet. • The first international IP connection came alive in 1992 between Chulalongkorn University and UUNET while Thai commercial Internet started its operation in 1994.

  14. 1992 • Military problem in May: TU became the third gateway to ACSnet • Middle 1992, Chula had its first leased line connection to UUNET which was shared by all of us • More members: ABAC, Mahidol University • Thaisarn was formed

  15. TCSnet --> Two Academic Networks • Thaisarn --> 1, 2 and 3 • ThaiNet (Chula, Chiangmai and AIT) --> UNINET • AIT was the only IX for the two academic networks

  16. 1995 • Commercial Internet: Internet Thailand and KSC • Communication Authority of Thailand has granted 16 or more ISP licenses
