ISAT EXCEEDS MEETS BELOW STANDARDS ACADEMIC WARNING • Measures your performance against the learning standards; drives instruction; class placements and eligibility. • Test scores do not determine a person’s worth! • Test is only one measure of your academic performance. • Express your anxiety verbally or in writing with someone you know will raise you up! • Do you’re best!
Before the Tests • Get a good night’s sleep! • Eat breakfast (avoid high sugar foods). • Wear comfortable clothes! • Mark test dates on your calendars. • Be on time! In fact, be early each day! • Set realistic goals and expectations.
During the Tests • Relax! Take deep breaths. • Think positively and take the tests seriously. • Use multiple choice test-taking strategies . • Use extended response test-taking strategies. • Use short-constructedtest-taking strategies. • Read all the directions. • Read each question and carefully. • Read every possible answer, it could be the last choice. • Read and respond to items one at a time rather than thinking about the test as a whole. • Don’t second guess yourself; go with your gut. Make an educated guess.
During the Tests (continued) • Reread the parts of the passage for selecting the correct answer. • Don’t look for a pattern! • Don’t spend too much time on any one question. • Check once in awhile that you have recorded the answer in the correct spot. • Skip difficult questions and come back to it later. • Only change answers if you are sure what you selected is incorrect; erase thoroughly! • Use any remaining time to check your answers.
Multiple Choice Choose… • General when others are specific. • Longest when others are much shorter. • Neither of the similar answers. • One of two opposite answers. • Answers that agree grammatically. • To avoid answers with absolutes (always, never, none, etc.). Use the process of elimination. Translate into a True/False statement when selecting between two answers you think are correct. There is no penalty for guessing, make an educated guess!
Extended Response-Reading Reading and Math Only • Change the question to a statement-Restate • Find an example from the text-Proof/evidence/references • Explain more about the detail you found-Understand • Form another thought-Opinion/personal statement • Summary Statement
Extended Response-Mathematics • Shows complete understanding of the problem’s mathematical concepts and principles . • Uses appropriate mathematical terminology and notations including labeling answer if appropriate. • Executes algorithms and computations completely and correctly. • Identifies all important elements of the problem and shows complete understanding of the relationships among elements. • Shows complete evidence of an appropriate strategy that would correctly solve the problem. • Gives a complete written explanation of the solution process; clearly explains what was done and why it was done. • May include a diagram with a complete explanation of all its elements.
Short-constructed Response Math Only Computation Problems Check your answers Example: 12 x 6 = 72 Check 72/6 = 12 and 72/12 = 6
ISAT SY13-14 • GOOD LUCK!!
