Recommendations Emerging from PRA1 Discussion(Diurnal and Mesoscale Variability) • Precipitation in LPB comes mainly from large MCSs with intense convection, often related to transients. In the SACZ region, this is less so, and even less so in Amazonia • Diurnal cycle is a combination of the afternoon peak in “ordinary” convection and the broad nocturnal peak in MCS rains • The 90-day SALLJEX period should be used for many model experiments, and to be most useful this requires reanalysis with all possible datasets • The expanded rainfall database for SALLJEX should be used to help diagnose biases in the satellite rainfall algorithms --------------------------------- • Enhanced datasets for LPB should be of 2 distinct types 1) enhanced data for long-term monitoring 2) field program data for a limited time for targeted process studies • High priority needs exist for continuous PDFs of rainfall rate, quantitative radar data, land surface hydrologic data, and wind and thermodynamic data. (• Include effects of ACC, notably deforestation and aerosols on precipitation processes-- efficiency, diurnal cycle, severe storms, …?)
