COMENIUS PROJECT 2010-2012 MEETING IN GROTTAMMARE 14/18/ FEBRUARY 2011
Chapter One • Tells of Gulliver’s childhood and young adulthood • Takes a voyage on the Antelopeand is shipwrecked • Wakes up on an Island called Lilliput • Is a captive of the Lilliputians, people who are six inches tall • Is taken to the capital city and housed in a temple
A voyage to Lilliput • The emperor believes himself to be the delight and terror of the universe, but it appears quite absurd to Gulliver who is twelve times as tall as he. • In his account the two parties in the country are distinguished by the use of high and low heels. • Religious disputes are laughed at about a problem which divides the Lilliputians: “ Should eggs be broken at the big end or the little end?”
Gulliver meets the Lilliputians • He finds that the population is split between 'Big Enders' and 'Little Enders‘. • The Emperor is keen on going to war with Blefuscuans to defend his idea : Eggs should be broken by the Little End. • The Empress likes Gulliver and finds him very nice and friendly.
Essential Questions: • HOW SHOULD WE TREAT THOSE WHO ARE DIFFERENT FROM US? • TO WHAT EXTENT IS WAR AN APPROPRIATE OPTION? • WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF AN EXTREME FOCUS ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY?
