The Observatory is implemented by the statistic and monitoring service of the Ministry for Ecology, Energy, sustainable Development and Sea. • It has been created in 2003. • With an joint steering committee • Different offices of our ministry : nature, hazards, water • Ministry for Agriculture and fishery • Agency for spatial planning and territorial competitiveness (Diact) • Coastal Conservatory, new Agency for protected marine areas (AAMP) • Ifremer (french maritime research institute) • Shom (naval hydrographic and oceanographic service) • Service of the Prime Minister for the sea (SG Mer)

  3. The Observatory has three main purposes : • Provide a better knowledge of the coastal area : list and collect all the relevant data on coastal zone, produce many indicators in each thematic field : agriculture, shellfish farming, land use, nature protection (MPA), coastal erosion, demography, integrated management, natural risks, water quality,… • Provide a better information flow between all stakeholders and to help to specify methods for data collection, processing and standardisation • Define prospective indicators and produce tools to assist decision-makers

The Observatory has different tools to disseminate information • A dedicated Website : www.littoral.ifen.fr • Indicators factsheets : 32 are presently online • Web newsletter (2-3 / year) with articles of the Observatory or our partners, mailing list of 950 names • Publication of reports on specific issues : atlantic islands, erosion, demography… • Organization of seminars or working groups

Metropolitan and overseas territories • More than 100 indicators and 120 geographical data (terrestrial and marine data) • WMS links : the tool can produce maps of spatially distant referenced data dynamically • Possibility to save indicators in xls files, to produce maps and statistics on different types of territories • www.littoral.ifen.fr
