  2. Leadership: • Is a process • Involves influence • Occurs in a group perspective (you need to have at least one constituent) • Involves goal attainment

Management: • is to exercise executive, administrative, and supervisory direction of a group or organization • Is the process of coordinating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people • is the process by which a cooperative group directs actions of others towards common goals

  4. Leadership vs. Management • Leaders • Create vision for organizations and units • Promote major changes in goals and procedures • Set and communicate new directions • Inspire subordinates • Managers • Deal with interpersonal conflict • Plan • Organize • Implement goals set by others (the leaders) • “Management is getting people to do what needs to be done. Leadership is getting people to want to do what needs to be done” (Bennis, 1994).

  5. Leadership vs. Management • The fact is that leadership and management are both important, they are two distinctive systems of action, both are necessary as each seek to do different things (Bennis,2003). Management Facilitate Managing resources and people Administers Maintains Controls Short-term View Does Things Right How and When Leadership Motivate Visionary Innovates Develops Trusts Long-term Perspective Does the Right Thing What and Why

  7. Leading and Managing: The Same or Different • When managers are involved in influencing a group of employees to meets its goals, they are operating under leadership. In addition, when leaders are involved in aspects such as planning, organizing, staffing or controlling, they are operating within management. Leaders and Managers Leaders Managers

  8. Leadership vs. Management “Management is about coping with complexity….. Without good management, complex enterprises tend to become chaotic… Good management brings a degree of order and consistency… (Kotter,1999) .” “Leadership, by contrast, is about coping with change…. More change always demands more leadership (Kotter, 1999) .”

  9. FurtherSimilarities and Differences Between Management And Leadership? • Management is a function that must be exercised in any business, leadership is a relationship between leader and led that can energize an organization. • Leadership is a facet of management, and leadership is just one important component of the directing function of management. • “Managing and leading are two different ways of organizing people. The manager uses a formal, rational method whilst the leader uses passion and stirs emotions” (Maccoby, 2000). • A difference between management and leadership relates to risk and vision. The leader provides the vision and then the deputy head or head of department, implements the vision, by motivating people to achieve the necessary goals.
