  2. WHAT IS A FATHER? A. “He who begets a child; the nearest male ancestor; a male parent.” (Prov. 17:21) B. “One who feeds & supports, or exercises paternal care over another.” (Job 29:16) 1. Involvement is the part forgotten today. I. DEFINED a. Georgia Youth Center (Correctional Institute) 62% No father at home. b. Many fathers are “too busy” with work or play to care properly for their children. 2. Many don’t know how to be a father, they weren’t raised properly themselves.

  3. WHAT IS A FATHER? A. Noah (Gen. 6:9) – Godly influence. 1. In a wicked world, Noah was righteous. 2. His children could have mocked, but they helped Noah build. 3. Saving our family is a success we need today. II. SUCCESSFUL FATHERS 4. Father’s who know God’s will & persistently live it will be a righteous influence! a. There were times when Noah sinned, (Gen. 10:21), BUT… b. His manner of life was to obey God (Gen. 6:9, 3).

  4. WHAT IS A FATHER? B. Abraham: 1. Commanded (Gen. 18:19). a. Took his authority seriously. b. Not just physical things, but spiritual. II. SUCCESSFUL FATHERS 2. Provided (Gen. 13:8-9; 14:1-24). a. Humbly served others. b. Contrast Lot’s bad choices – camp near Sodom. c. What choices do we make?

  5. WHAT IS A FATHER? C. Job (Job 1:1-5): 1. Feared God – turned from evil (1:1). 2. Sacrificed for his family (1:4-5). 3. Job cared for their heart. 4. How many fathers today care for what is in the heart of their children? II. SUCCESSFUL FATHERS

  6. WHAT IS A FATHER? A. Eli (1 Samuel): 1. Eli’s sons knew not Jehovah (2:12, 17, 22). 2. What did Eli do? a. Complained (2:23). b. Reasoned (2:24-25). III. FAILED FATHERS 3. But did NOT restrain them (3:13)! a. There comes a time when reasoning doesn’t work & they must be stopped. b. Some may consider it “extreme” or “abusive”, but if parents don’t enforce then parents don’t care (Heb. 12:6-10).

  7. WHAT IS A FATHER? B. David (1 Kings 1:5-6): 1. Adonijah – good looking, but spoiled. a. Exalted himself (1:5). b. David never rebuked him (1:6). 2. All Eli did was rebuke – and God condemned him. III. FAILED FATHERS David did not even rebuke!

  8. WHAT IS A FATHER? A. Diligently Teach (Deut. 6:4-9). B. Give Reminders (Ex. 12:24-27; Josh. 4). C. Exhort – tell them what TO DO (1 Thess. 2:10-12). IV. GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS FATHERS D. Discipline: 1. Promptly & Consistently (Pr. 13:24). 2. With purpose (Pr. 19:18). 3. Not abuse, but discipline (Pr. 23:13). 4. Rod & reproof together (Pr. 29:15, 17). 5. From love (Heb. 12:7-9).
