  1. Examining the Standards for Mathematical Practice MTL Meeting October 18, 2011 Hank Kepner Connie Laughlin Lee Ann Pruske Beth Schefelker Mary Mooney Rosann Hollinger

  2. 6-12 Content Goals for 2011-2012 • Deepen our understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice with a focus on: #1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. #3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. #6 Attend to precision. • Develop an understanding of various progressions of mathematics development.

  3. Learning Intention and Success Criteria We are learning to deepen our understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice. We will be successful when… we can link Standards for Mathematical Practice to classroom instructional behaviors for both teachers and students.

  4. Where are we at today? • Summarize the Standards for Mathematical Practice. • Why are the Standards for Mathematical Practice important?

  5. Standards for Mathematical Practice http://commoncoretools.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/practices.pdf

  6. Reasons to Re-visit the Mathematical Practices • Develop a common understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice in all MTLs. • Develop a common message across the district as to the work of the MTL and the development of understanding for the CCSS-Mathematics.

  7. Jigsaw the Reading • Each person reads their assigned standards. • Highlight the important ideas in these standards. • Join your expert group to prepare a short summary of these ideas. • Return to your original table and take 3 minutes for each standard to explain your standards to those at your table.

  8. Bagels The local bagel store sells a baker’s dozen of bagels for $6.49, while the grocery store down the street sells a bag of 6 bagels for $2.50. Create multiple representations of the relationship between the cost of the bagels at each store that will help you determine which store has a better deal.

  9. Content Standards • 6.EE.9 Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problems that change in relationship to one another… Analyze the relationship…using graphs and tables • 8.EE.8 • Domain: Creating Equations • Cluster: Create Equations that describe numbers or relationships • A-CED 2*

  10. Practice Standards 1. Making sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 6. Attend to precision.

  11. Linking the Practices to Your Work as an MTL In what way are lessons being planned to provide students an opportunity to apply aspects of the Standards for Mathematical Practice in their daily experiences? What experiences do classroom teachers need in order to develop these practices in their skill set?

  12. In Summary • Link LESA and Mathematical Practices. • Support continuum of development of the Standards for Mathematical Practice over time.

  13. Learning Intention and Success Criteria We are learning to deepen our understanding of the Standards for Mathematical Practice We will be successful when… we can link Standards for Mathematical Practice to classroom instructional behaviors for both teachers and students.

  14. Reflection How will you model these practices in each of your assigned schools?

  15. Feedback Questions How will you use today’s ideas in your classroom visits and coaching conversations about lesson planning? How will you notice when students’ behaviors exhibit the mathematical practices?
