Cathy (cartoon) Discussion • What story is being told in this comic strip? • How do the two opening frames set a tone for that story? • What point is the artist (Cathy Guisewite) making? • How does she support that point with images? • With wordplay? • With stereotypes? • With Allusions? • What is the tone of the cartoon? • How is the audience’s identification with the character of Cathy and her various predicaments likely to affect their response to this specific cartoon?

  5. Gender-neutrality • What is lost when you choose gender-neutral language? • What about when you impose it on texts that originally contained gender-specific language? (For example, ancient religious texts, and texts from eras where the language may not have been interpreted as being gender specific.)
