  2. This traditional style of art in El Salvador comes from the northern town of La Palma, and that is where artists are trained and live today.

Fernando Llort Fernando Llort, born in San Salvador, El Salvador,  displayed an artistic inclination since an early age, when his school teachers would pick him to draw maps during geography lessons. After graduating from high-school he obtained an architecture degree from the University of El Salvador. After traveling and studying in Europe and the United States, Llort returned to El Salvador amidst war. Leaving San Salvador for La Palma, he started an artist workshop called, “La Semilla de Dios.”

The inspiration for his pieces came during the Salvadorian Civil War, when Llort fled to the small rural village of La Palma, to enjoy the simple life in the mountains, and escape the realities of his war-torn country. Many of his designs include animals, nature, and village life in El Salvador.  • Fernando's art is heavily influenced by the Mayan culture and has been able to mix modern ideas with a naive style of drawing. • Today La Palma is renowned for its native artists and handicraft artisans. Fernando Llort and the other artists from San Salvador are recognized as founders of the town's artisanal movement, which provided an opportunity for campesinos(farm workers) to learn about art and helped them find sources of income other than field work.
