  1. Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s March 17 - 23, 2019 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) PRESS SPACE BAR TO CONTINUE To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.

  2. What is a Weekly World Watch? The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible. . I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW: • Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. • Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. • Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” • The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” • Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. • Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.

  3. BIBLE QUOTE What is in a Weekly World Watch? Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. News Photo This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. HEADLINE The source of the headline and the date are included. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. EVENT This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (andy@weeklyworldwatch.co.uk). Please note that these are personal thoughts and the aim is purely to stimulate Bible study. COMMENT This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version.(Book, chapter, and verse)

  4. This Week’s Developments March 17 - 23, 2019 • US will recognize Israel's sovereignty over Golan • Trump Golan statement draws regional condemnation • Moscow increasingly ready for military confrontation • Russia sends squadrons of nuclear bombers to Crimea • Brexit Is postponed, but chaos still reigns • Cyclone Idai 'might be southern hemisphere's worst such disaster' To print any of the event slides that follow, click the picture on the upper right PRESS SPACE BAR TO CONTINUE

  5.  And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, Trump says US will recognize Israel's sovereignty over Golan Heights Guardian, March 21, 2019 Donald Trump has announced that the US will recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, captured from Syria in 1967, in a dramatic move likely to bolster Benjamin Netanyahu’s hopes to win re-election, but which will also provoke international opposition. Previous US administrations have treated Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory, in line with UN security council resolutions. Trump declared his break with that policy, in a tweet on Thursday. He said: “After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!” By defying a 52-year-old unanimously adopted UN resolution on “inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war”, Trump has also broken the postwar norm of refusing to recognise the forcible annexation of territory – which has underpinned western and international opposition to the Russian annexation of Crimea. EVENT Golan is mentioned in the Bible 4 times. Every time it says “Golan in Bashan”. The Bashan region, now known as the Golan Heights, is a part of the biblical territory promised to the Patriarch Abraham and the people of Israel for an everlasting covenant recounted in Genesis 15. The city of Bashan was a refuge city (Deut, 4:43).  The Golan Heights were captured by Israel from Syria in 1967 in the 6 Day War. Until now the world has said that this area is “occupied Syrian territory”. Trump has changed that – but why now? Most commentators say it is to bolster Netanyahu in the elections due in Israel on 9th April. It could also be an attempt to show Assad, Iran and Hezbollah that they cannot dictate the outcome post the Syrian conflict. But what comes next?... COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE (Joshua 20:8-9)

  6. Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down.  There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled.  Trump's Golan statement draws strong regional condemnation NBC, March 22, 2018 From Syria to Turkey and beyond, President Donald Trump's abrupt declaration that Washington will recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights drew strong condemnation on Friday. The Syrian government called it "irresponsible" and a threat to international peace and stability, while Iran's foreign ministry said it plunges the region into a new crisis. The Foreign Ministry in Damascus said Trump's statement confirms "the blind bias of the United States to the Zionist entity," referring to Israel, and added that it won't change "the fact that the Golan was and will remain Arab and Syrian.” The ministry also said Damascus is now more intent on liberating the Golan, "using every possible means." EVENT COMMENT What comes next could be the events of Isaiah 17 and Zechariah 12. Trump’s announcement that the US will recognise the Golan Heights as Israel’s territory has the ability to create conflict. There has been a furious response from Syria, Turkey and Iran. So could Golan be the spark that ignites the forest? We know that Zechariah 12 speaks of the surrounding peoples coming against Israel and being defeated. But chapter 11 speaks of BASHAN.. The area of the Golan Heights. It speaks of fire in Lebanon, howling in Bashan, roaring of “young lions”, Jordan being spoiled. It is possible that events in Zechariah 11 (conflict and trouble in Lebanon, Golan and Jordan) lead to Isaiah 17 – the destruction of Damascus. Psalm 83 would be fulfilled at this time as the surrounding peoples of Israel launch attacks against them. Israel is weakened at this time but overcomes and defeats those enemies. Then Gog invades. BIBLE QUOTE (Zechariah 12:1-3)

  7. Moscow Increasingly Ready for Major Military Confrontation Eurasia Daily Monitor, March 21, 2019 In the last several years, the Russian military has drastically increased its battle readiness in apparent preparation for a possible major conflict with an opposing massive ground force. The massive buildup was first publicly reported in September 2016 by first deputy defense minister and chief of the General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov. He discussed the issue in a briefing to Russian journalists following the conclusion of the Kavkaz 2016 military exercise which was centered on Crimea and the Black Sea region. Kavkaz 2016 has since been overlapped by even larger Russian war games, but in 2016 they were the biggest such maneuvers since the 1980s. Most recently, in March 2019, Russia’s minister of defense, Army General Sergei Shoigu, addressed a meeting of the Duma defense committee to tout the major achievements of his (and Gerasimov’s) tenure leading the military establishment since November 2012. Shoigu boasted about the establishment of 136 permanently battle-ready BTGs. The defense minister added that almost all Russian army commanders down to the regimental level have battle experience.  EVENT Both Moscow and Washington have announced the suspension of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which may officially be scrapped in August, after the mandatory six-month waiting period passes. Both sides appear to be going down the road of nuclear deterrence as they did in the Cold War. But nuclear deterrence does not require a vast standing army deployed on the one side (Russia). This shows that Russia still believes a conventional confrontation involving hundreds of thousands of ground troops is still an option. We know it is an option. The Bible says Russia will descend like a cloud to cover the land – these troops will be used… COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE In the distant future you will swoop down on the land of Israel, which will be enjoying peace after recovering from war and after its people have returned from many lands to the mountains of Israel. You and all your allies—a vast and awesome army—will roll down on them like a storm and cover the land like a cloud. (Ezekiel 38:8-9 NLT)

  8. Russia sends 'squadrons' of nuclear-capable bombers to Crimea Japan Times, March 19, 2019 EVENT Russia has sent “squadrons” of nuclear-capable Tu-22M3 strategic bombers to Crimea in response to the deployment of U.S. Navy Aegis Ashore missile defense installations in Romania, according to a report in Russian state-run media. “The deployment of American missile defense systems in Romania came as a major challenge, in response to which the Russian Defense Ministry made the decision to deploy long-range missile-carrying bombers Tupolev Tu-22M23 at the Gvardeyskoye air base,” Viktor Bondarev, the head of the Russian Federation Council’s Committee for Defense and Security, was quoted by Russia’s TASS news agency as saying Monday. “This move has drastically changed the balance of forces in the region,” Bondarev said of the missile defense shield. While the bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, it is unclear if those weapons would come with the bombers when they are sent to Crimea. COMMENT On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin marked the fifth anniversary of Moscow’s widely condemned annexation of Crimea from Ukraine with a visit to the Black Sea peninsula. As he arrived Russia announced that nuclear capable bombers had also been sent to Crimea. Then on Friday a US B-52H Stratofortress large-payload multirole strategic bomber aircraft practiced a mock attack on a Russian naval base in the Baltic Sea region. A strategic bomber of the U.S. Air Force approached to within about 99 miles (160 km) of the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on Friday, according to flight data from air traffic network Plane Radar. We can see both sides pushing at each other as they prepare for war. We know there is a king of the north (Russia) v king of the south (US / UK / Saudi) conflict at the time of the end… BIBLE QUOTE 40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.  (Daniel 11:40)

  9. Brexit Is postponed, but chaos still reigns The New Yorker, March 22, 2019 EVENT “Are we ever going to leave the E.U., Prime Minister?” a reporter from the Daily Mail asked Theresa May at a press conference in Brussels, on Thursday night, which was held hours later than expected. May, who looked weary, assured him that Brexit was still on. Only the timetable had changed. When May arrived in Brussels earlier that day, for meetings with the leaders of the twenty-seven countries remaining in the E.U., the U.K. was on course to crash out on March 29th, after Parliament had twice rejected the deal that she had negotiated with the E.U. to manage that exit, and it hadn’t agreed on an alternative. The E.U. countries had to unanimously agree to any extension, and key leaders, notably Emmanuel Macron, of France, were sounding unsympathetic; they wanted the agony of negotiating Brexit to end. A chaotic, off-the-cliff, No Deal Brexit had hardly ever looked more likely. But now there is a new date, or, rather, two: May 22nd, if Parliament approves the deal next week, to allow all of the necessary paperwork and supporting legislation to be dealt with, and April 12th, a new cliff edge, if it does not. There is turmoil in British politics and division in the country. There is increasing likelihood that the UK could crash out of the EU without a deal. Very few want this to happen but if no one can agree on a way forward the default position is for the UK to leave with no deal. We are surely living in the times of the feet of Nebuchadnezzar’s image – when the iron (Rome Empire) and the clay (people / democracy / referendum) are not mixing and producing great division and instability. It is at this time when people are not united and divided that the little stone returns - Christ is coming! COMMENT Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it,.As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 2:42-43 NIV)

  10. Cyclone Idai 'might be southern hemisphere’s worst such disaster' Guardian, March 19, 2018 EVENT The devastating cyclone that hit south-eastern Africa may be the worst ever disaster to strike the southern hemisphere, according to the UN. Cyclone Idai has swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe over the past few days, destroying almost everything in its path, causing devastating floods, killing and injuring thousands of people and ruining crops. More than 2.6 million people could be affected across the three countries, and the port city of Beira, which was hit on Friday and is home to 500,000 people, is now an “island in the ocean”, almost completely cut off. The official death tolls in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are 200, 98 and 56 respectively. But these totals only scratch the surface; the real toll may not be known for many months as the countries deal with a still unfolding disaster. Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, announced three days of national mourning late on Tuesday and said his government would declare a national emergency. As many as "300 to 400" bodies line the banks of a road out of the city of Beira in Mozambique, according to an eyewitness account, and flood waters have formed an inland ocean that is visible from outer space. The harrowing scene, described by Zimbabwean Graham Taylor, suggests that the human toll of Cyclone Idai is likely to far exceed official estimates. It follows reports from aid agencies on the ground detailing how entire villages and towns have been completely flooded in the wake of last Thursday's high-end Category 2 storm. The high commissioner for Mozambique in the UK, Filipe Chidumo, said Wednesday "This is a tragedy of biblical proportions.” The groaning of creation continues to get worse – the earth is in labour… COMMENT Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.  BIBLE QUOTE (Romans 8:2-22 NLT)
