What is AETIC? • AETIC, is a non-profit organization that represents the Spanish companies of the • Electronics • Information Technologies • Telecommunications sector. • Aim: to defend the general interests of these industries before the Administration, corporations and organisations of any nature. • AETIC is a meeting point for its associates to voice actions that promote the development of these industries.
Whodoes AETIC represent? • AETICbrings together more than 1300 companies: • 300 companies directly • more than 1.000 indirectly (through smaller associations or corporate groups) • The representativeness of AETIC surpasses 90% of the sector. • In 2008, the business of the member companies of AETIC had a market value equal to 77.977 million euros and they were responsible for the most part of the national private R&D&i effort.
The advantages of industry associations • Knowledge of needs and problems of their member companies • Unique position in terms of industry reach and networking power • Not tight up in day-to-day commercial operations, able to look at the bigger picture in economic, political and regulatory terms and think more long-term. • Multi-linguistic and international management skills
Goals I • Protect the collective, professional interests of its members through the promotion of its industries. • Create added value and economic activity in Spain • Contribute to the development of products and services, in defense of the industry’s interests • Represent its members before the Government, regional and local authorities, as well as other public and private, Spanish and foreign institutions • Enhance the economic, social and work conditions of the community.
Goals II • Draft recommendations on socio-economic issues (economic policy and planning) • Enhance business management techniques and methods, in particular through research, knowledge transfer, training and information mechanisms • Strengthen communication channels that link to relevant domestic and international organisations • Provide services that professional organisations demand.

Structure I • GROUPS • Six sub-sectorial groups representing the sector’s interests through the association as a whole.
Structure II • COMMITTEES • AETIC’s structure is backed up by five working committees which act in areas of common interest for all the member companies.
Structure III BOARD OF DIRECTORS • AETIC’s Board of Directors is chosen every 4 years. • It comprises representatives from Multinationals as well as from SMEs. • It also represents the sub-sector and regional distribution of AETIC’s members.
R&D Department: Overview • AETIC’s R&D+I Department has the main objective of promoting an effective participationby companies, particularly SMEs, in the electronics, IT and telecommunications sector in: • European R&D+I programmes, in particular the 7th Framework Programme, CIP and EUREKA • Spanish National and Regional R&D+I Plans: AVANZA2 Programme, CENIT Programme, etc. • The main instruments to achieve this objective are: • AproTECH Office • Projects Management Office • Spanish Technology Platforms
Projects Management Office • Service for technical and economic/administrative management of projects • Help companies to develop R&D&I proposals • Two services: • Technical Office • Economic /Administrative Office • Main tasks: • Analizing the suitability of a proposal for a funding program • Helping finding partners and making the consortium • Writing the proposal • Meetings, Deliverables, Reports • Disemination

AproTECH: EuropeanProjects Office • Creation of AproTECH : February 2003. • Institutional supports: Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio (Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade). AproTECH has also the support of the Spanish Centre for Technology and Industrial Development, CDTI. • Aims: • Promotion of the participation of the Spanish enterprises in the R&D European programmes (such as 7th FP, EUREKA/IBEROEKA) • Preparation of the Spanish enterprises for the new challenges regarding the 7th EU Framework 2007-2013 and the Technology Platforms, as well as the new Programme for the Innovation and Competitiviness, CIP. • Promotion of the competitiviness of the Spanish industrial sector.
AproTECH: Aims • Main characteristics: • offers free information and advice for companies • guidance on preparing and submiting proposals • search for partnerts • adaptation to the program/call • support to enable SMEs to participate in projects • preliminary evaluation of proposals and negotiation with the European Commission

ETPs: Stakeholders • Industry (large, medium and small, embracing the whole production and supply chain) • Public authorities (given their role of policy-makers and funding agencies, as well as promoters and consumers of technologies) • Research institutes and the academic community • Financial community (e.g. Venture capital organisations and the European Investment Bank) • Civil society, including users and consumers
ETP: Strategic Research Agenda • Strategic Research Agenda addresses: • the technological R&D challenges which are essential for Europe's future competitiveness • and the barriers to the development and deployment of new technologies and the new technology-based public goods and services.
ETP: Creation Stages Stage 1:Stakeholders get together to agree a common vision for technology Stage 2: Stakeholders define a Strategic Research Agenda setting out the necessary medium- to long-term objectives for the technology Stage 3: Stakeholders implement the Strategic Research Agenda with the mobilisation of significant human and financial resources
ETP: Advantages • R&D&I project incubator • Give market visibility to Innovation Centres and Universities • Allow to know private/public user needs (early demand) • Allow a better strategic coordination and lobby towards european and national R&D funds • Allow a coordination between local and national R&D&I aids, increasing synergies • Allow to know education needs in strategic fields
ETP: A few things to take into account • The technology fields should be of strategic importance for Europe • Requiring intensive research and technology progress • There is a need to create a critical mass • public and private resources at regional, national and European level. • There is a well identified industrial and research community • ready to collaborate in a common Strategic Research Agenda. • There is a clear commitment from the stakeholders to invest in the implementation of the SRA • (industry, academia, Member States, the EU, financial institutions etc.). • The platforms are open • to include new relevant players at any time

JointTecnnologyInitiatives • Derive from ETPs with the purpose to implement a substantial part of the SRA • They are legal entities which are proposed as a new way of realising public-private partnerships , involving industry, the research community and public authorities at European level to pursue ambitious common research objectives. • A mechanism for performing research at EU level. Now they are PPPs. • JTIs will support large-scale multinational research activities in areas of major interest to European industrial competitiveness and issues of high societal relevance. • A JTI focuses on one specific industrial area, has a well defined objective, addresses a market failure and is funded by a combination of private and public investments.

ETP and JTI: Conclusions • ETP and JTI can be of high value to stakeholders and to European economy and society • build partnerships to sharerisk in research, concentrate resources, and compete • speed up innovation by knowledge and experience sharing • build consensus to turn research results into products and services • increase research effort and Improve return on investment in RTD • But: • should be open and avoid closed club
