  3. “to give up” vs. “to stick to it” • “Don’t give upand you will succeed.” • “When faced with challenges, she gave upand refused to try.” • “Your suggestion sounds good, but I will stick tomy way of doing things.” • “Many people are hesitant to try new foods because they like to stick towhat they’re familiar with.”

  4. Give Idioms • give a hard time= to make someone feel uncomfortable with questions or comments. My boss gave me a hard time for being late to work. • give (something) a shot= to try; to work hard to a goal. Natasha wasn't sure if she was ready for the Olympics, but she gave it a shot anyway to become a successful competitor. • give away= to give things to people for free. The grocery store is giving away free ice cream bars • give in= to submit to the will of another person/self; to allow something to happen, to surrender Bill tried as hard as he could to resist the temptation of another piece of pizza, but finally he gave in. Video: “Asian F”Idioms, Slang and Pop Culture • “no grounds”- no reason He was only late one time, so we have no grounds to fire him. • “kiss my grits” (slang/cultural)- comment popularized by an American TV sitcom by a waitress from somewhere in the Southern United States. Means to go away or accept whatever it is that is happening or “kiss my butt” • “on drugs” – to take illegal drugs He was acting so crazy last night, I thought he was on drugs • “bust a (serious) move” (slang)- to dance/to dance well, usually pertaining to popular dance/hip hop. Also a song made popular by Young MC in 1989 FNU Language Enhancement 2012-2013

Idioms, Slang and Pop Culture • “An A minus is an Asian F” (cultural)- pertaining to the perception that an A minus grade received by an Asian American is similar to that of an “F” grade. • “get into your business” – to interfere in someone else’s work or affairs Quit getting into my business. Concentrate on your own work! This problem is between my girlfriend and I, so don’t get into our business and let us settle it on our own. • “bitten off more than (one) can chew” – trying to do more tasks than one has time or energy to do. Watch the assigned video clip from “The Joy Luck Club”. • There are several Chinese etiquette rules that were broken in this video clip. Pretend you have to explain to a foreigner why each of these broken rules would be offensive to a Chinese host. What Chinese values are esteemed as demonstrated by this video clip?
