Introduction/Log In • Students please log in to WisCareers portfolio and Waunakee High School website • 8th Grade Student Conference background • Early discussion and parental involvement leads to greater student success and options • Skills, not just degrees, are the keys to 21st century career success
Student/Parent Discussion • Take time at home to ask your student: • “What are your favorite hobbies?” • “What are your most natural talents?” • “Do you prefer working alone or with groups?” • “What are my best or worst school subjects?” • “Do you prefer hands-on or discussions?” • “What after-school activities have you joined or want to join in high school?”
Classes, Clusters, Co-Curriculars • High School Grade Point Average • A Day/B Day Schedule differences • WisCareers portfolio and High School Career Clusters websites • Co-Curriculars (sports, music, arts, academic, leadership) • ACT Testing each year 9th-11th grade
Long Term Academic Planning • Know high school program offerings (Advanced Placement, Youth Options, Apprenticeships, Co-ops, etc.) • Job Shadowing, Volunteering, Working • Technical College (2 year), University (4 year), Apprenticeships, Job Training, Military – find the path that is right for you and gives you options
High School Success Tips • Attendance is a huge factor of success • Do homework the day/night you are assigned • Get involved, stay balanced • Be proactive and a self-advocate • Find and listen to adult mentors (parent, teacher, counselor, coach, advisor, boss, etc.)
Transition Process • High School student visit (May) • Schedules available on Infinite Campus by August 21 (fees can be paid that day too) • Practices start early/mid August for sports • Freshman First Day (only 9th graders 1st day of school for activities and transitioning) • Contact HS Counseling Office with questions: Bishop(A-E), Fassbender(F-K), Landis(L-Q), Kuntz/Glynn (S-Z) – 849-2115
