What is School Direct? • School Direct allows schools to: • grow their own teachers • decide who to recruit and which subjects • form partnerships so that training is aligned and quality is guaranteed • negotiate how the training year is delivered • have the option to employ at the end of the course
Which schools can apply? • The Teaching Agency is looking for outstanding schools to lead the programme • It is also looking for schools who are offering to train national priority subjects
Two routes… • School Direct Training programme • Open to all graduates • Funded via tuition fees • Bursaries available • School Direct Training programme (salaried) • Employed by the school • Salary subsidised by Teacher Agency • Three years’ work experience • High quality graduates • This replaces the GTP scheme
What does the training look like? • 60 days minimum of training activity • 120-150 days in your training schools • Teaching is divided between at least two schools
Can I afford it? Bursaries are available…. • Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Languages: • £20,000 for a first • £15,000 for a 2:1 • £12,000 for a 2:2 • Art/Design, Tech, Economics, English, ICT, PE, Biology, Music, Geography, History, classics, RE, Primary: • £9000 for a first • £4000 for a 2:1 • £0 for a 2:2
Other financial considerations? • School Direct • Tuition fees are payable by student, but… • Your bursary is tax free, and… • Student loans are available • Student loans are not available to School Direct (salaried) trainees • Salaries are subsidised by the Teaching Agency
Entry Requirements? • You need to pass a skills test in numeracy and literacy (usually before interview) • You can visit the Department skills tests web pages: www.education.gov.uk/teachskillstests. • You need a GCSE grade C in both Englishand Maths (and Science if you teach 3-11) • Some HEIs will accept equivalent qualifications • A first degree of a UK HEI or equivalent
