Out of State Public Colleges/Universities • California has two public university systems, the CSU’s and the UC’s. • Other states have their own public university systems. • These public university systems do take students outside of their state. These students are considered as non-resident students.

Out of State Public Colleges/Universities • Public university systems will charge “non-resident” students a higher tuition, but that “non-resident” tuition is still comparable to “California Resident” tuition at the CSU/UC’s. This makes these a good option for our students (especially due to the bad financial problems our California public universities are in). 8. Admission Requirements Once you make a list of which colleges/universities you are interested in, go to that school’s website to find out the admission requirements.

11. Admission Requirements- College Testing Most Colleges/Universities in the U.S., require students to take either the ACT or SAT exam. Some may require additional tests in a particular subject area called the SAT II Subject Tests. Once you know what tests the school requires, be sure to complete these exams no later then December of the Senior Year. It is recommended that students try to get these completed by Spring of their Junior Year. 12. Applying to the College/University Students should make a calendar that shows all the application deadlines for each college/university they plan to apply to. Students should find the website that hosts the application for the school(s) they are applying to. Many private colleges/universities use The Common Application. This application can be found at www.commonapp.org.

13. WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education offers a program called WUE. This program helps reduced the tuition for California residents who are attending certain colleges/universities in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming. Before applying to a WUE school, students should contact that college/university and ask how to apply as a WUE student. www.wiche.edu/wue

14. Applying to the College/University Many Private Colleges/Universities will require an essay or personal statement. Please make sure you know what the topic is and give yourself several weeks to write the essay, have several people proofread and to rewrite. Topics are typically similar to the UC Prompts… • Prompt #1: Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.  • Prompt #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

15. Applying to the College/University FEE WAIVERS Most college applications charge an application fee. There are sometimes options for Fee Waivers. • Students can email or call the school and request a fee waiver or free application. • Some colleges or universities will accept the NACAC Fee Waiver. 16. Teacher/Counselor Recommendations Many of the colleges/universities require one or more teacher recommendations. These can be a form that the teacher needs to complete or just a formal letter from the teacher. Some of the colleges/universities require a school counselor to fill out a Secondary School Profile that includes an School Profile and an official transcript Please provide teachers and counselors with at least 2-4 weeks to submit these forms/letters.

17. What do I do after I apply? -Check email daily. Colleges will send emails asking for clarification or more documentation. Make sure to follow the deadlines given. -Apply for financial aid. Complete the FAFSA and apply for any scholarships at the college/university. -Once a decision is made on which college/university the student will be attending, they will need to complete placements tests, sign up for housing if needed, send an Intent to Register, attend an orientation, and register for classes.
