P Read and summarize what you should be able to do by the end of the week Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to: (A) predict and describehow different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes;
A catastrophic • Horrible natural event
A Ecosystem • All the abiotic and biotic factors interacting with each other in a particular area
A Catastrophic Event • An event such as a hurricane, flood, or tornado that causes a sudden or dramatic change to the Earth’s surface
A Flood • An overflow of water that submerges land
A Hurricane A violent tropical cyclone storm with torrential rains and high winds caused by temperature difference of ocean water and air.
A salinity • The amount of dissolved salt in a body of water
A Storm surge • An abnormal rise of the sea along a shore, caused primarily by the winds of a storm
A Tornado • A violent, spiraling cyclone storm seen as a funnel shaped cloud that causes lots of damage.
Weathering • The breaking down of rocks into small particles such as sand and pebbles.
Erosion • The movement of small rock particles from one location to another by means of water, ice, or wind.
Deposition • When particles carried by water, ice, or wind are deposited (dropped) in another location
Watershed • the land area that drains into a particular lake, river, or ocean.
C Create a word wall: Front: Word and Colored Picture Back: Definition, name and class period Besides the catastrophic events that we wrote today, what other catastrophic events can you think of? How would they affect an ecosystem? E
10.8.13 Catastrophic Events and Ecosystems • What is the mass of the rock if the volume is 20 mL? • What is the volume of the rock if the mass is 30 g • Calculate the density of the rock.
P Use the Info below to answer the questions: 1. What 2 things impact ecosystems? 2. What are three catastrophic events that affect ecosystems? Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to: (A) predict and describehow different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes;
A Take Your Own Notes During EDUusing the graphic organizer C Quiz
10.9.13 Historic Catastrophic Events • Log on • Open the K drive • Open 7th grade science • Open “hot list catastrophic event” • Complete research and essay on your catastrophic event using the hot list
10.10-11.13 Engineering Nature Video We will predict and describe how catastrophic events impact ecosystems by completing a KWL chart while we watch a movie. Create a Pyramid from the web if you know the primary consumers have 100,000 KCal
P Use the Info below to answer the questions: Describe how hurricanes, floods and tornadoes impact ecosystems (8) Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to: (A) predictand describe how different types of catastrophicevents impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes; (B) analyzethe effects of weathering, erosion, and depositionon the environment in ecoregionsof Texas; and (C) model the effects of human activity on groundwaterand surfacewaterin a watershed
E Explain how it is possible for catastrophic events can impact ecosystems positively and negatively.
