Multimodal Learning Environment Project By: Alissa Furry
Summary • In this activity, students are provided with a blank graph and they choose how many parts the pie graph will have. This manipulative provides children with the pie graph and the equation. The students are asked to select how many sections they want the graph to show and how many sections they want to be covered. The computer then generates the fraction for the students. • http://nlvm.usu.edu • http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/category_g_1_t_1.html
The Feedback Principle • As shown from the screenshots, this program only utilizes corrective feedback (Moreno & Mayer, 2007). This program does not tell the children an incorrect answer. Instead of providing the students help with the problem, the students can make their own problem by deciding what fraction they are working on and seeing physical proof of it.
Standards • Number & Operations—Fractions1 • 3. Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. • Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line. • Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. • http://www.p12.nysed.gov/ciai/common_core_standards/pdfdocs/nysp12cclsmath.pdf
