Safer Parks Pilot Projects • Tackling anti-social behaviour, including fly-tipping and drug use • Increasing visibility and removing hidden spaces • Installing railings and gates to address motorbike use and secure parks • Site specific requirements such as improved lighting, no calls to phone box, moving seating
Local Area Agreement 2007 - 2010 To improve the quality of 10 Priority Parks in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas by an average of 12% using the Bristol Parks Quality System • Selected using Safer Parks criteria from list of 22 priority parks To achieve 3 Green Flags in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas (on top of 4 city-wide) • selected for their potential to meet the standard, their location and local and city-wide significance
The first four parks Willmott Park Glyn Vale Open Space St Paul’s Park Mancroft Park
Glyn Vale Open Space, Knowle • Large area of open space with SNCI status and fantastic views over Bristol • Poorly used due to poor access, poor appearance, flytipping and motorbike use. • Capital works to improve major footpath routes and entrances. • Work with enforcement officers to prosecute identified fly-tippers • Improving quality of entrance spaces to deter fly-tipping
Mancroft Park, Lawrence Weston • Neighbourhood play area with run down and poor quality equipment • Community events and play outreach sessions to inform design • ‘natural play’ - a different approach to playground design using the whole site • Play Ranger sessions to support use of the site and combat bullying

Raising the Standard • Two full time park keepers, five days a week providing maintenance, community engagement and community safety roles • Capital improvements completed - including games and seating area, footpath improvements, boulder play trail and 76 new trees • Play Ranger sessions after school in the park • Park Quality score increase from 37% to 62% in first year • 82% of residents satisfied or very satisfied with improvements.
St Paul’s Park • Considered unsafe by local community • Generally used as cut through rather than for recreation • Poor visibility across site • Run down and outdated play equipment • Safer Parks data showed high levels of anti-social behaviour and drug and sex litter
Creating a new park environment • Increase community use through provision of high quality park features • New path layout and tree removal to increase visibility • New play area for junior and toddlers, with exciting equipment to attract use • New Teenager activity zone. • Events space with ground anchors for circus workshops • Draw upon the potential inherent in parks natural environment, character, local setting and enclosure
Progressing to Green Flag Award • National Design Award Achieved June 2008 • New Park Keeper employed for Summer 2008 • Trainee Park Keeper to join local team in Autumn 2008 • Management Plan completed for December 2008 • Green Flag Application January 2009
Developing the service Development of interventions which are P&GSS priorities, including:- • Young people’s facilities – skate parks and MUGAs • Project Biker • Park Keepers and Traineeships • Partnership working • Ongoing community engagement
Where are we • 4 parks improved, 6 to do • Quality Improvement Target exceeded 2007, • Next assessment in June 2008 • 2 Green Flag applications in Jan 2009, 1 in Jan 2010 • Parks reward targets remain in new LAA 2008-2011, but no Green Space indicators carrying over beyond 2010.
