  1. VIIRS Activities in Support of theNOAA Satellite Proving Ground Sixth Meeting of the Science Advisory Committee 28 February - 1 March, 2012 National Space Science and Technology Center, Huntsville, AL transitioning unique NASA data and research technologies to operations

  2. Relevance to SPoRT Suomi NPP • Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite • Joint NASA/NOAA instrument • MODIS & AVHRR/OLS heritage • High-resolution; better near edge-of-swath • 370 m res. for Imaging bands (MODIS 250 m Visible) • 740 m res. for Moderate bands (MODIS 500/1000 m IR)

  3. VIIRS Improved Scan Geometry View of same earth location at satellite nadir MODIS (1 km) VIIRS (Simulated) (740 m) View of same earth location at edge of swath Lee, T.F., Miller, S.D., Schueler, C., & Miller, S. (2006). NASA MODIS previews NPOESS VIIRS capabilities. Weather and Forecasting,

  4. Relevance to SPoRT Suomi NPP • Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite • Joint NASA/NOAA instrument • MODIS & AVHRR/OLS heritage • High-resolution; better near edge-of-swath • 370 m res. for Imaging bands (MODIS 250 m Visible) • 740 m res. for Moderate bands (MODIS 500/1000 m IR) • Superior spatially • No gaps, even at equator • Swath width: 3000km vs 2330km

  5. VIIRS Swath Width 3000 km McIDAS-V

  6. Relevance to SPoRT Suomi NPP • Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite • Joint NASA/NOAA instrument • MODIS & AVHRR/OLS heritage • High-resolution; better near edge-of-swath • 370 m res. for Imaging bands (MODIS 250 m Visible) • 740 m res. for Moderate bands (MODIS 500/1000 m IR) • Superior spatially • No gaps, even at equator • Swath width: 3000km vs 2330km • Inferior spectrally • 22 vs 36 bands • Some improved areas

  7. VIIRS vs MODIS channels H2O DNB O3 CO2

  8. Accomplishments since SAC 2009 Suomi NPP launched 28 October 2011 VIIRS commissioning process ongoing Retrieved proxy data from NOAA CasaNOSA site Retrieving data from Atmospheric PEATE at UW/SSEC Developed ability to ingest VIIRS in McIDAS-X and display in AWIPS & AWIPS II

  9. VIIRS IR (McIDAS-X) SVM15

  10. VIIRS IR (AWIPS I) SVM15

  11. VIIRS IR (AWIPS II) SVM15

  12. VIIRS DNB (McIDAS-X)

  13. Future Work • Demonstrate usefulness of VIIRS products • Focus on High-Latitude issues over Alaska Region • Include testbed cases in Southern Region • Resolution improvement over MODIS (full scan) • Add VIIRS to CONUS Hybrid • Create OCONUS Hybrids over AK and Pac • Low light channel (Day-Night-Band) • Clouds, Fog • RGBs
