Bamboos in Bangladesh 33 Species: 7 wild species in forests 26 domesticated Bambusa vulgaris (Baijja Bansh): most widely used bamboo species in rural Bangladesh • Widely used in • Building construction • House making • Agricultural implements • Fishing traps • Improvised bridge on small canel • Making household products Bambusavulgarisgroove
Propagation methods.. • Do not set seed after flowering, no seedling progeny • Propagate only through Vegetative methods 1. Rhizome cutting • Low survival rate • Bulkiness of (20-30Kg) of rhizomes • Expensive option Rhizome cutting
Propagation methods.. 2. Pre-rooted branch cutting • Easiest method • Limited only to wet seasons • Very few branches develop root at their base (Banik,1997 )
Propagation methods.. 3. Secondary branch cutting Hossain et al. J. Bamboo and Rattan, 2005, 4 (3), 231–241
Propagation methods.. 4. Primary and Secondary branch cutting Hossain et al., J. Bamboo and Rattan, 2006, 5 (3&4),117-126 • Convenient • The numbers of suitable branches (>5mm dia.) to produced root are inadequate. • Limited only to rainy season during June-July.
Propagation by Leafy Branch Cuttings • Regeneration from leafy brunch cuttings • Nodal leafy cuttings • Tip cuttings • Effect of IBA on rooting ability of leafy branch cuttings • - 0%, 0.1%, 0.4% and 0.8% IBA Solution
Experimental procedure Nodal leafy cuttings Tip cuttings Non-mist propagator 4-6 weeks Propagule ready for planting Propagules in nursery bed (6 months old ) Cutlings in polybag (2 months) Rooted cuttings

Summary of findings • Nodal leafy cutting and tip cuttings, both produced roots, survived and formed rhizome. • The highest rooting percentage and root number per cutting was in 0.8% IBA treated cuttings. • IBA treated cuttings showed better survival capacity in the nursery condition over controlled one. • The result presented here could help in opening a new avenue for the mass propagation of this variety bamboo species.
Further aspects • The rooting percentage of leafy branch cuttings of B. vulgaris in this study was 56. There is scope to increase the rooting ability of cuttings of the species. • Furthermore, the performance of planting stock developed through the methods was not assessed in field condition. This might be one of the important aspects for future study.
