  1. Required for Grades 6 - 8 Young Adult Book Policy

  2. What? • With the availability of reading materials in print and online, we encourage our students to read what interests them while promoting their love for reading. • Not all reading material is suited to each child, though. The Young Adult Book Policy provides for parental control over which books their children are reading. • A Young Adult Book Permission Form gives a student permission to read books while on campus that are designated “YA”.

  3. When? • The YA Permission Form must be signed by the parent/guardian and the student before any YA books may be brought on campus to read, or borrowed by that student from Odyssey Charter School. • All forms should be returned by the first day of school so that the permission information may be printed on the student’s library card.

  4. Where? • Signed forms will be kept on file in the school media center until the student graduates or the parent/guardian changes the permission granted on the form. • Permission may be revoked by the parent/guardian at any time by contacting the media specialist.

  5. Why? • Young Adult literature is a product of modern times. • It is literature that addresses common experiences and issues that concern children as they go through the teenage years. • These are experiences that students are either having, or becoming aware of because of relationships surrounding them, or because of exposure to the media.

  6. Common themes in YA literature • Concern over grades/school • Popularity • Puberty • Race • Death • Drug use • Horror • Neighborhood • Job/working • Friendship and its problems • Getting into trouble (serious and/or with the law) • Interest in the opposite sex • Money • Divorce • Single parents • Remarriage of parents • Problems with parents, grandparents, younger siblings Adapted from Autumn Dawn Wells http://ils.unc.edu/MSpapers/2861.pdf

  7. Why is a “YA” Form needed? • The parent/guardian is the first and foremost teacher of each child. • Each child matures at his/her own rate. • It is up to the parent to signify that he/she feels the child is ready to read books that contain the common themes in YA literature.

  8. Middle School Collection • In the Odyssey Charter School media center, we have certain books designated for middle school readers only. • In this area, we also have several books with a large “YA” on the spine showing that these books are reserved for our most mature readers. • Parents/guardians still reserve the right to allow or not allow his/her child to read these books under their guidance.
