Final Project Group 2:Older Adult Populations Ebenezer Berhanu, Michael Cardenas, Justin DiSanti, Rob Dion, Meghann Meyers
Target Population: Older Adults • Generally 65+ Years Old • CDC General Guidelines • Should be as physically active as their condition allows (Chronic diseases) • Avoid inactivity • 150 minutes moderate intensity/75 minutes vigorous intensity per week • At least 10 minute bouts, spread throughout week • Muscle strengthening, endurance, flexibility, balance
Approach • Only 8% of older adults meet PA guidelines (National reported average around 50%) • 77% don’t do any PA (National average approximately 25%) • Potential Barriers • Poor health, fear of falling, pain, poor self-efficacy, poor understanding of benefits, etc.
Approach: Continued • Reduce Inactivity • Educate about PA benefits • Set positive role models • Increase self-efficacy
Goals • Short-term • Decrease sedentary lifestyle • Increase PA levels • Confidence, self-efficacy • Long-term • Consistent higher levels of PA • Lower incidence of chronic disease • Stroke, heart disease, cancer, diabetes • Decrease dependency on others • Improve psychological well-being
Theoretical Framework • Self-determination theory • Perceived autonomy, competence • Improve these aspects to increase motivation, which leads to behavioral change • Strive for increased intrinsic motivation • Show benefits, positive role model, high inactivity rates • Health belief model • Likelihood of exercise depends on… • Perception of severity and likelihood of disease • Perceived appraisal costs and benefits • Our goal is to show that PA leads to marked decreases in likelihood of disease and other negative side effects associated with inactivity
PSA: Older Adults • PSA Video Link • Footage shot at FoxdaleVillage Senior Center • 45 minute exercise class • Participants range from 70s to 90s • Dispersal of PSA • Daytime hours seniors home while others at school/work; cheaper • News programming • Main networks (CBS, ABC, NBC, etc) • TV Stations tailored to elderly • TV Land, Retro, GSN • Religious outlets
Conclusion • Deliver intervention through media frequently (dose-response effect), variety of media outlets targeted toward the elderly population • Maximize reach • Ideally, we would have a corresponding phone service or website to supplement this add and provide guidance • Increase effectiveness and maintenance (social connectivity)
Conclusion (continued) • Partner with local community/church organizations • Increase effectiveness, allow for higher adaptation • Decrease sedentary behavior in older adults • Increase confidence, self-efficacy • Educate about PA benefits and disease risks • Provide positive role models
