  1. Finding Hope in the Wonderful Counselor

  2. Introduction • hope= the anxiousanticipation of good • Romans 8:24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

  3. Finding Hope in Defining the Problem

  4. There is HOPE in any problem you face if . . .: • You ADMIT the problem exists (acknowledge the facts/truth) • You DEFINE the problem the way He does

  5. You then ACT on the solutions to the problem! • Level 1: Repentance (a change of themind) • Luke 13:3 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

  6. Luke 17:1 He said to His disciples, "It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come! 2 "It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.

  7. 3 "Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 "And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' forgive him."

  8. Level 2: Confession (to say the same thing God says about it) • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  9. Matthew 5:23 "Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.”

  10. Level 3: Growth (changing the way you think and act to be like Christ) • Ephesians 4:22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

  11. 23and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

  12. The Source of His Definitions Give us Hope epistemology = source of truth

  13. Your source of truth determines your responseand your direction to life’s situations • Matthew 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"

  14. Matthew 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.’”

  15. 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

  16. Our source of truth is God’s Word! • 2 Peter 1:3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

  17. How the Wonderful Counselor Defined Problems (Examples) • Physical Problems (results of the curse of sin on the body) Example: BlindMan – John 9

  18. Other Examples: • Matthew 11:1- 5

  19. Matthew 15:30 And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them. 31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

  20. Hope: The Wonderful Counselor is also the GreatPhysician – and He can heal anyone of anything at any time if He so chooses!

  21. Spiritual Problems • Sinful • Mark 8:38 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

  22. sinful = to miss the mark • Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, • Hope: Holiness is possible through Jesus!

  23. Adultery • Matthew 5:27 You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  24. 29 "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

  25. Matthew 5:30 "If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. • Hope: Marital loyalty is possible with His help!

  26. Liar • John 8: 42-59 * Hope: The Wonderful Counselor is also the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life!

  27. 1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;7but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

  28. Foolish moros= English word ‘moron’

  29. Matthew 7:26 "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.”

  30. Jesus used an example in Matthew 25:1-13 and Luke 24:24-27

  31. Luke 24:24 “Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see." 25 And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

  32. 26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?" 27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

  33. Hope: The Wonderful Counselor is the only wise God our Savior ! • Jude 1:25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

  34. James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

  35. Little Faith (unbelief) – doubting God • Matthew 6:30 "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!”

  36. Mark 6:6 And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.

  37. Matthew 13:58 And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief. • Matthew 16:8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread?”

  38. Matthew 14:29 And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

  39. 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"

  40. Hope: The Wonderful Counselor tells us where we can get FAITH! • Mark 11:22 And Jesus answered saying to them, "Have faith in God.” • Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once.

  41. Luke 18:42 And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." • Luke 17:6 And the Lord said, "If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and be planted in the sea'; and it would obey you.’”

  42. Out of the heart (the real source ofproblems!) • Matthew 15:16 Jesus said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also? 17 "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?

  43. 18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. 19 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

  44. Luke 6:45 "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”

  45. Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

  46. Hope: The Wonderful Counselor knows your heart and can help you change it! • Ezekiel 11:5 Then the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and He said to me, "Say, 'Thus says the LORD, "So you think, house of Israel, for I know your thoughts.”

  47. Conclusion: Q: How do you define problems? Q: Are you willing to accept the truth, admit your wrong, and act in obedience so you can solve the problem and change?
