  1. Origin Of God’s Children A Study Of The Church In God’s Eternal Plan Eph 3:10 10to the intent that now unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places might be made known through the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

  2. God’s Eternal Purpose • We should see pieces of it in every age • Look at God’s Children through the ages • Different ways people are God’s children • See what God wants us to be like

  3. God Provided For His Children • 1. God Created Man In His Own Image Gen 1:26-28 • 2. God Placed Man In A Peaceful Environment Gen 2:8-10 • 3. God Provided For Man’s Every Need Gen. 2:15-24

  4. 1. God Created Man • Genesis 1:26-28 26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

  5. 2. God Placed Man In A Peaceful Environment • Genesis 2:8-10 8And Jehovah God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9And out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four heads.

  6. 3. God Provided For Man’s Every Need • Gen 2:15-24 15And Jehovah God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. 16And Jehovah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. 18And Jehovah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him. 19And out of the ground Jehovah God formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them: and whatsoever the man called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him. 21And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: 22and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

  7. God’s Children Created In His Image We Are His Children In a generic sense of creation Gen. 1:26-28 Paul used this sense at Athens Acts 17:24-30 David used this sense Ps. 8:3-9 Concept Denied By Many Today Those who reject a Divine Creator Accept the world exists by unprovable chance Must accept that matter sprang from nothing That man evolved from simple inorganic substances Results Of That Thinking Man has a very brief purposeless life He dies without hope of anything better or more enduring His biodegradable remains recycle endlessly to nowhere Futile existence leads man to search for something better

  8. God Is Beyond Our Finding Out • He cannot be tested in a laboratory • We cannot know God’s will by our senses • Man cannot find God’s will by experimentation • To be known God must be self-revealed • But God is more than a hypothesis • To be tested by experimentation • The Way, Truth And Life – Historical Figure • He is Jesus of Nazareth • The personification of Divine revelation

  9. God Provides Man With Purpose • Definitive Creation Demands Purpose • An intricate, complex, expansive universe • More than just a whim or an impulse • Complexity demands design • Design demands purpose • God’s Purpose For Us • Unknowable purposes – past our finding out • There are likely unrevealed purposes we cannot know • These are unknown because they are unrevealed • Demands of self-revelation • Whatever the purpose God has for His creation • We must look to that revelation for His Divine purpose • Man’s greatest good is realized in achieving that end

  10. Athenians Concept Of Deity • Athenians thought God needed Man • Acts 17:16-24 – Athenians thought served God • They built lavish alters for every god they could find • Even built alter to “An Unknown God” • Yet they did not know the true God who made all • They did not know their purpose relative to God • They thought the gods needed temples to dwell • That the gods needed man provide them with service • They had no concept of their need for God • They did not recognize relationship to their creator

  11. What Is God’s Purpose For Us? • Paul Explains God’s Purpose For Man – Acts 17:24-31 • He made the worlds and all things in them Vs. 24-26 • Lord of heaven and earth does he need temples • God doesn’t need men to serve Him or provide anything • Since He gives life and breath to all things • He has made from one every nation of mankind to live • He has determined the bounds of our habitation • God desires that man seek Him Vs. 27 • If perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him • Though He is not far from each of us • We are His offspring Vs. 28-29 • In whom we live and move and exist • Even their own poets wrote “For we are also His offspring” • Therefore the creature owes responsibility to creator • We must live righteously before Him who will judge us Vs. 30-31 • Having overlooked the times of ignorance • He now demands that all men everywhere should repent • Because He has fixed a day He will judge us in righteousness • Proving to all men everywhere by the resurrection of Jesus

  12. God’s Purpose For Man And SinRomans 1:18-32 • God’s Relationship To Sin Vs. 18 • God’s wrath is revealed against all ungodliness • And unrighteousness of men who suppress truth • Man’s relationship to God Vs. 19 • That which is known about God is evident in them • God made it evident to them • Since the creation He is clearly seen through what is made • Invisible attributes • Eternal power • Divine Nature • Man is without excuse Vs. 20

  13. God’s Purpose For Man And SinRomans 1:18-32 • Man’s Relationship To Sin Vs. 21-23 • They knew God but did not honor Him as God • They were not thankful to God • They became futile in their speculation • Their foolish heart was darkened • Professing themselves to be wise they became fools • Exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image • God’s Righteous Judgment Vs. 24-32 • Therefore God gave them over to the lusts of their heart to impurity • That their bodies might be dishonored among them • They exchanged the truth of God for a lie (idolatry) • Worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator • God gave them over to degrading passions (homosexuality) • God gave them over to do what is not proper • They were filled with all (lists their evil character) • Those that practice such things is worthy of death

  14. What It Means To Be In God’s Image – Gen. 1:26 • Can not be physically • God is a spirit – Jo. 4:24 • He is without form – Deut 4:12-19 • But the inner man • With a spiritual nature • With an intellect above the animals • Free will not instinct • Self awareness not found in the animal world

  15. God Is Love – 1 John 4:7-8 • In God’s image – return that love 1 Jo. 4:7-8 • Ethical capacity to return that love to Creator • Transform our character into God’s character • That we might love one another • A Love That Submits Completely 1 Jo. 2:3-5 • That manifests itself in subservience to God • God wants us to be dependant upon Him • To Love the Lord our God Matt. 22:36-40 • With all our heart • With all our soul • With all our mind

  16. God’s Purpose Determines Our Nature • God’s requirements for man demanded • Creatures created in the image of that Creator • Must will and act upon that self-determination • But theologians theorized • Since God is the sovereign of the universe • For man to possess free will • Would destroy the sovereignty of God • Because man could say NO to a sovereign God • Therefore Calvinism resulted • Since man could not possess a free will • God must determine those whom He would save • And those whom God saves could not be lost • Truth – Judgment establishes God’s severity • Where all will be judged for the deeds done in the body • Whether they be good or evil 2 Cor. 5:10 • Man cannot reject God’s sovereign will with impunity

  17. God’s Purpose Determines Our Nature • Conversely the nature of God demands • Nothing less than a moral response to His will • A people who of their own volition say YES to God • People created in God’s image must have free will • With the capacity of choosing to say YES to their maker • Without the capability of saying YES or NO to God • Our words of praise and adoration become meaningless • Our actions of submission and subjection are strings of a puppet • Acting only as the Creator pulls the strings without love or devotion • Nothing of any real moral value either to us or our Creator

  18. God’s Purpose Determines Our Nature • The Power Of choice accords with the characteristic of God • This concept is stressed in scripture repeatedly • God is no respecter of persons – treating all in His image fairly • In The Old Testament • Deut 10:17 – Lord is God of gods and Lord of lords…does not show partiality • Ezek 18:19-24 – The soul that sins shall die through 3 generations • In The New Testament • Rom 2:1-11 – Renders every man according to his deeds, God is impartial • Eph 6:5-9 – There is no partiality with God who treats both slave and master • Peter Draws This Conclusion Acts 10:34-35 • Seeing God’s treatment of Cornelius deduces • Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons • But in every nation he who fears Him • And works righteousness Is acceptable to Him

  19. God’s Purpose For Mankind • God Gave Man A Free Moral Self • Then Asks We Give It Back To Him • Matt. 16:24 If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. • God Wants To Change Man’s Character • Searches for “people for His own possession” • Who have conformed their character to His • Seen in His will from the very beginning • Not determined along racial bounds • But by a proven moral character • Those who have escaped the corruption in the world

  20. Those Who Are Not Like The World • 2 Peter 1:1-4 • Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and the Saviour Jesus Christ: 2Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue; 4whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in that world by lust.

  21. The Church Through The Ages • Patriarchal Age • God begins to unfold His plan for man • His children must seek and find their creator • Mosaic Age • He makes covenants and promises to man • To select a Chosen People from the world • Prophecies of How He would do it • Age Of Christ • Fulfillment of those promises and prophecies • His eternal purpose for man clearly seen • He seeks to prepare and perfect man to live with Him

  22. Trace The Development Of Plan • God develops a special people • Children of God who reflect their Father • Who through free will want to serve Creator • Therefore accountable for their actions • Who see sin and choose to avoid it • Who has the capacity for a trusting faith in God • God providing for man what he cannot provide • Conditioned on obedience and submission to will • Providing a means of escaping death to live forever • We become Children of God through Christ • Living eternally with God in Heaven

  23. 1 John 3:1-6 Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is. 3And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4Every one that doeth sin doeth also lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 5And ye know that he was manifested to take away sins; and in him is no sin. 6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither knoweth him.
