  2. Bodily Waste: • Carbon dioxide – exhaling • Solid waste – feces • Excess water – sweat, urine • Trash in our bodies (blood) is filtered through our kidneys, which cleans the blood by removing these waste products. Filtered, clean blood goes back to heart and lungs; waste goes to bladder.

  3. Objective: TLW demonstrate an understanding of the urinary system by illustrating and labeling a diagram. Standard:Life Science: Students know the role of the kidney in removing cellular waste from blood and converting it into urine, which is stored in the bladder.

  4. Renal Artery: carries blood to kidney.

  5. Kidney:filtersthe blood. • Filters and removes waste products like water, extra nutrients, salts, calcium, ammonia , (harmful compound formed during digestion of proteins), urea, (harmful compound formed during the metabolism of protein), etc.

  6. Renal Vein: carries clean blood back to the heart.

  7. From the kidney, waste (now called urine) travels through the ureter to the . . .

  8. Bladder!!!!! • This is the storage area for urine until it is expelled from the body

  9. Pause and Think About it…. • Discuss with your FACE PARTNER: • Why could you easily die from a burst bladder?

  10. Urine is expelled out of body through the urethra. • Yes, both boys AND girls have a urethra • It looks the same on the inside of the body

  11. Fact! Your kidneys send about 6 cups of urine to your bladder every day!

  12. Right now: • Draw a picture of the human urinary system in your notebooks and write down below it one new thing you learned today.
