  4. Philip II 1180-1223 • Nobles more powerful than French king • King of England owns more French land than the king • Attempts to re-claim land • King John and Normandy

  5. Philip IV the Fair 1285-1314 • Wanted absolute authority • Meets with the three estates (French social classes) • Clergy • Nobles • Townspeople • Leads to the development of the Estates-General • A form of representative government • Trouble with England

  6. Capetian Dynasty Ends • Philip IV has three sons and one daughter • Louis X • John I (lived five days) • Philip V • Charles IV • Isabella married to Edward III, King of England
