Our Hope 1Thessalonians 4:13-18
Grieving • Normal and healthy in response to a loss • Means we loved that person
Stages of Grief • Denial – not want to face reality • Bargaining – seek to change reality • Anger – arises due to failure to change reality • Depression – flatness, emotionally shutting down • Acceptance – facing reality and working through the emotions that result from the loss, verbally saying good-bye. • Everyone reacts differently. • Ultimately, moments of sadness will get shorter, less intense and occur less frequently.
Dealing with emotions • Q to James Bond “Never let them see you bleed.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13 13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. • We do not grieve like the rest of men • NOTE: We should still grieve • Individually • Corporately
1 Corinthians 12:26-27 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
1 Thessalonians 4:13 13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. • We do not grieve like the rest of men • NOTE: We should still grieve • Individually • Corporately • Support and encourage one another • Give extra measure of grace • Why do we not grieve like the rest of men? Because of the hope we have in Christ.
1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. Our hope in Christ: • Christ died and was raised from the dead by God the Father through the Holy Spirit.
Romans 1:1-4 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God-- 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. Our hope in Christ: • Christ died and was raised from the dead by God the Father through the Holy Spirit. • God will resurrect everyone who has accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. 18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
