Email A form of communication in which electronic messages are created and transferred between two or more devices connected to a network.
Mail Server A Hardware/software system that determines from the recipient’s address one of several electronic routes on which to send the message.
Protocols Rules that determine how the Internet handles message packets flowing on it.
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Determines which paths an email message takes on the Internet.
POP Post Office Protocol. Handles incoming messages.
IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol. A protocol for retrieving mail messages from a remote server or messages that are stored on a large local network.
MIME Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension. Protocol that specifies how to encode nontext data, such as graphics and sound, so it can travel across the internet.
Email Program Software that requests mail delivery from the mail server.
Email Address • Unique ID of an individual or company on the Internet.
Username The name a person goes by with his/her email address.
Message Header Contains Info about the message.
Message Body The message itself.
Signature Appears at the bottom of an email message with basic contact information about the sender.
To Line Where you type the recipients full email address.
Courtesy Copy and Blind Courtesy Copy. To be able to send mail to people who should be aware of the email message, but are not the emails main recipients.
Groups A way to send emails to more than one recipient at a time.
From Line The senders name, email address, or both.
Subject Line • An abbreviation of an incoming message.
Attachment • A File that can be linked to an email message containing a picture video or other document.
Kilobyte • 1,000 characters(aprox)
Read Only File • A file that you can view but not edit.
Detaching a File • Saving an email attachment.
Signature File • Usually contains your name, title, and your company name.
Netiquette • Internet Etiquette. Proper behavior on the internet.
Emoticon • Group of keyboard characters that when viewed together, represent a human expression.
Queued • A message temporarily held with other messages , and then sent when you exited the program.
Filter • Used to automatically delete or store an email based on its content.
Junk Mail/Spam • Unsolicited mail usually advertising or selling an item or service.
Quoted Message • Copy of the original senders message inserted with your comments.
Nickname • Example: Mom for mother. Home for Home Page.
POP POP3 Messages • Post Office Protocol. Incoming Messages.
Mozilla Thunderbird • Email Program by Mozilla.
Opera Mail • Built in email client that comes with Opera.
Antivirus Program • Software that eliminates and detects viruses.
Internet Security Software • Software that detects viruses and other security threats on the internet.
Virus Signature/Pattern/Definition • Sequence of characters that is always present in a virus.
Virus • Programs, files, and attachments that can harm your computer.
Unsolicited Commercial Email(UCE)/Bulk Mail • Unwanted solicitations, ads, or email chain letters sent to an email address.
Windows Live Mail • Email program that you use to send and receive email.
