Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, in the northeast of the island. In 2011, the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.

  5. Saint Patrick's Day What is the St. Patrick's Day? Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick , the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Why symbol is a shamrock? On St Patrick's Day it is customary to wear shamrocks and green clothing or accessories. St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leafed plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. This story first appears in writing in 1726, though it may be older.

  26. Westlife were an Irish boy band, formed in Sligo in July 1998 and disbanded in June 2012. Originally signed by Simon Cowell and managed by Louis Walsh, the group's second and final line-up consisted of Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and Shane Filan.

  27. Interesting facts: People & Culture The three most famous symbols of Ireland are the green Shamrock, the harp, and the Celtic cross. Many Irish family names start with "Mac" or "O'...", which means respectively "son of ..." and "grandson of ..." in Gaelic. The ancestral language of Irish people is Irish Gaelic. Nowadays 1.6 million people claim a self-reported competence in Irish, but only 380,000 fluent speakers remain.

Interesting facts: Land & Geography At a height of 688 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, Croaghaun (on Achill Island) are the second highest cliffs in Europe - after Cape Enniberg in the Faroe Islands. Phoenix Park in Dublin is the third largest city parks in Europe after Lwalled a Mandria in Venaria Reale (Turin) and Richmond Park in London. It covers 707 hectares

  29. Interesting facts: Heritage Sites A few km from Newgrange, the passage grave of Knowth contains more than a third of the total number of examples of megalithic art in all of Western Europe. The Céide Fields in County Mayo are the most extensive Stone Age site in the world. It contains the oldest known field systems in the world (6,000 years old), as well as Europe's largest stone enclosure
