Importance to petroleum industry 50% of the world´s proven oil reserves are contained in carbonate rock reservoirs General knowledge of carbonate reservoirs is significantly poorer than for siliciclastic reservoirs, and the available tools and workflows correspondingly less well-adapted. Moreover, efficient production of carbonate-hosted reserves demands specific geologic and engineering expertise. Therefore, knowledge acquisition is a key focus for all actors in the industry, and contractors are very interested in developing new and better suited tools and workflows
Main objectives of the project Carbonate Reservoir Geomodels - II: • Become the preferred carbonate research group for the petroleum industry • Continue to improve geological and fluid-flow models of carbonate reservoirs based • on integrated geological, petrophysical and geophysical studies of a selection of • outcrops at sub-seismic and seismic scales. • A library of 3D data on geometry, petrophysical properties, and seismic properties • will enable refined reservoir modelling. • Identify best-practice geostatistical methods for carbonate reservoir characterization. • Improve rock physics modelling of carbonates based on the study of pore geometries • in limestones and dolomites from a variety of depositional and diagenetic settings. • Improve upscaling methods for carbonates. • Continue to graduate MSc and PhD candidates with specialist knowledge of carbonate rocks.

Suggested outcrops: SPAIN • Reefal carbonates (Paleocene) Complete shelf-margin-slope outcrop (Paleocene – Lower Eocene) -Pinnacle and barrier reefs (analogue to subsurface Libya) -Middle Paleocene unconformity karst (studied by Baceta et al.) -matrix porosity and dolomitization – not studied previously
Suggested outcrops: • Reefal carbonates (Paleocene) • Hydrothermal dolomites (host: Carboniferous limestones) SPAIN
Suggested outcrops: Etretat; Chalk channel deposits • Reefal carbonates (Paleocene) • Hydrothermal dolomites (host: Carboniferous limestones) • Thrust-top platform carbonates (Miocene) • Carbonate submarine channel and fan systems (Miocene) • Strait deposits; SE Spain • Chalk (Middle Cretaceous); Etretat • Strait deposits; northern Corsica SPAIN FRANCE Calcarenite di Gravina (photo from Pomar & Tropeano (AAPG Bull. Funding:Estimated minimum number of industry participants = 4 Note that total costs per company will be reduced if >4 companies participate If less than 4 companies participate the funding from RCN will be reduced accordingly. Submit proposal to Research Council (KMB/Petromaks programme): Deadline 15/10-2008 Letter of interest from industry partner must accompany application to NRC
Potential industry sponsors: StatoilHydro, ConocoPhillips, DNO, Total, Maersk, Petrobras, Shell, ENI, Gaz de France. Note that we will establish a steering committee consisting of sub-project managers and sponsor members when the project is approved by the RCN: The steering committee may add/eliminate outcrops from the outcrop portfolio as well as do adjustments to the scope en route. If the project is not approved by the RCN we may still run the project as a joint industry project at a total cost of 16 MNOK over 4 years. This would imply a minor reduction in scope and no PhD students and Postdocs For further information: Please contact Dr.Gunnar Sælen (gunnar.salen@iris.no) or Professor Michael R.
