  2. Mission • “ The Center for Academics and Sports is dedicated to providing quality education for traditional students and non-traditional students, with a strong emphasis in helping low-income youth to grow physically, mentally, and ethically through academic and athletic programs.”

  3. Goals- Youth Programs • Promote a balanced & healthy lifestyle by incorporating a blend of athletic and academic activities • Interact with adult role models and establish new friendships

  4. Goals- Youth Programs • Develop social skills such as communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution • Increase self-esteem, leadership, and problem-solving skills • Experience a college environment alongside university students, staff, and faculty

  5. Background • Free academic and athletic summer programs • Served over 500 youth during 2010, from St. Paul, Minneapolis, and east metro suburban schools • Transportation and meals provided at no cost • Special emphasis on students from low-income households and communities of color • Promote life-long learning, access to higher education and the development of healthy lifestyle choices

  6. Curriculum • 5 days a week • Divided into four periods, two academic and two athletic • Activities include: fitness, fellowship, athleticism, ethics, skill development in academics and sports, leadership development, college preparation, and career-planning classes

  7. High School Leadership Group • Principals nominated participants • Selected by Center’s staff • Leadership training in the spring • Served as junior staff members during the summer

  8. World Culture Program & English Language Learners • Language and culture camps • Participants selected by EMID • All elementary age students • Language camp for limited English speakers • Culture camp to develop diversity awareness in local kids • Students exposed to Hmong, Somali, Latino, Chinese, French, and African-American cultures

  9. New, Fall 2011 • Supplemental Education Services (SES) Program • Year- round program • Provide tutoring in math and language arts, with mentors & counselors assigned to specific students • Provide bi-weekly academic updates to schools & families

New, Fall 2011 • High School Student-Athlete Workshop • Workshops for high school students (and their parents) interested in playing a sport at the collegiate level • Topics covered include: • dealing with college recruiters, coaches, and/or with potential agents, financial advisors, and professional teams.

  11. In Development Degree completion programs for professional athletes to give them marketable skills- • Starting as freshman for those who turned pro after high school (common for baseball
and some in hockey) • Degree completion for those who left early to began their pro careers • Others who have BA degrees but no marketable skills will need a useful graduate program • This will require a partnership with UST student services and possibly a consortium of other colleges Role models in schools • College and pro athletes (particularly minorities who are successful academically)  going into schools to assist kids in appreciating the value of education

In Development • Community programs • Conduct forums/conferences on ethics and value issues relating to sports in society. • Conduct local (MN) research on relevant issues – Ex. graduation rates of athletes in schools and college, minority representation in coaching and management positions. • Serve as a clearinghouse/ referral agency for others involved in youth sports.

Goals- Athletic Programs • Provide future, current, and retired athletes quality information and education to finish their degree • Be our students “one stop shop” by providing all necessary services to complete their degree • Provide seminars and workshops to inform athletes of pressing issues such as; college recruitment norms, how to “deal” with agents, and money management • Broaden the number of schools we visit and expand to other local and larger cities within the area

Charles Jackson Foundation – High School Leadership Program staff
