Punctuating Quotations • Always start a new quotation with a capital letter. • “I like cake.” CORRECT • “i like cake.” INCORRECT
Punctuating Quotations • Punctuation at the end of a quote (. ! ?) goes inside of the quotation marks • “I like cake.” CORRECT • “I like cake!” CORRECT • “I like cake?” CORRECT • “I like cake”. INCORRECT • “I like cake”! INCORRECT • “I like cake” ? INCORRECT
Punctuating Quotations • Some quotations are split into two parts. This is called a broken quotation. • “I like cake,” Sammy said, “because the frosting is so sweet.” • When the quote is broken the second half is not capitalized.
Punctuating Quotations • When the quotation is broken use a comma so that the reader knows it will continue. • “I like cake,” Sammy said, “because the frosting is so sweet.”
Quotations and Dialogue • When writing quotations as dialogue in a narrative make sure to make a new paragraph and indent when the speaker changes. “I like cake.” Sammy said. “I like cookies.” Bobby said as he took a big bite of his chocolate chip cookie. “I wish I had some cake right now!” Sammy said angrily. “It’s not fair.”
