Citations • Purdue Owl • MLA Citations • Pay attention to where the parentheses and the punctuation go. • Go through your essay. Wherever you used outside information include a citation. The citation should be the author’s last name in parentheses. • If no author is given, put the first few words of the title in quotation marks in parentheses.
Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing • Purdue Owl • Who uses quotations? • Use quotations sparingly. You use a quotation when you want to highlight the words themselves. • Make sure that quotations flow with your text. • It might be helpful for you to use quotations when you are addressing contrary views. This way it becomes clear that you are not distorting your opponents’ arguments.

Works Cited Pages Here are some guidelines: • Refer to the Purdue Owl’s guidelines for electronic sources • Your works cited page should be a separate page, and the words Works Cited should be centered on the top line • Alphabetize according to the first word in each entry • Typically the first word is the author’s last name. If there is no author, then the first word is the first word in the title that is not the, a, or an.
