  4. Escalation The Archduke’s assassination set off a series of events that changed the world: 1. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 2. Russia mobilized to aid Serbia. 3. Germany aids A-H, declares war on Russia. 4. France mobilizes to aid Russia. 5. Germany declares war on France. 6. Germany invades Belgium. 7. UK declares war on Germany. 8. Ottoman Empire mobilizes to aid Germany and A-H. 9. Italy joins France, UK, and Russia. 10. Bulgaria joins OE, Germany, and A-H. 11. US joins Italy, France, UK, and Russia.

  11. Trench Warfare Troops dug in on the Western Front from Belgium to the Switzerland. They thought the war would be quick, but for four years the trenches became their home.

  13. Teenagers in War Many teenagers fought in World War I, often lying to eager recruiters about their true age. The youngest known soldier was 12 years old.

  14. Life on the battlefield ranged from extreme boredom to intense, overwhelming agony. It was a surreal existence never encountered by an army before.
