ANSEL ADAMS. 1902-1984. HIS LOVE OF THE NATURAL WORLD BEGAN EARLY AND BECAME THE MOST POTENT INFLUENCE ON HIS ART. HE IS SEEN AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL FOLK HERO AND A SYMBOL OF THE AMERICAN WEST, ESPECIALLY OF YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, A PLACE HE VISITED EVERY YEAR OF HIS LIFE.

HIS LOVE OF THE NATURAL WORLD BEGAN EARLY AND BECAME THE MOST POTENT INFLUENCE ON HIS ART.
HE IS SEEN AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL FOLK HERO AND A SYMBOL OF THE AMERICAN WEST, ESPECIALLY OF YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, A PLACE HE VISITED EVERY YEAR OF HIS LIFE.
AT THE AGE OF 12, ANSEL TAUGHT HIMSELF TO PLAY THE PIANO AND LATER WORKED AS A CONCERT PIANIST. HIS LOVE OF MUSIC INFLUENCED HIS ART THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE. HE WANTED HIS PHOTOGRAPHY “TO VOICE THE MELODIES OF THE WHITES, BRING OUT COUNTERPOINTS OF THE TEXTURES, AND SOUND THE SONOROUS BASS OF THE BLACKS”
AT AGE 17, ADAMS TOOK A JOB AS CUSTODIAN OF THE SIERRA CLUB’S OFFICE. THEN IN 1934, HE WAS ELECTED AS A MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE SIERRA CLUB, A ROLE HE MAINTAINED FOR 37 YEARS.
TO ASSIST IN TEACHING THE TECHNICAL SYSTEM HE HAD DEVELOPED AND TERMED THE ‘ZONE SYSTEM’, HE PUBLISHED A SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHIC TEXTBOOKS THAT REMAIN IN USE TODAY.
TAUGHT AT THE ART CENTER SCHOOL IN LOS ANGELES 1941, FOUNDED THE SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE 1940, PRESSED FOR THE CREATION OF A PHOTO DEPT AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN NEW YORK (1ST PHOTO DEPT IN A U.S. MUSEUM) 1967, FOUNDED THE FRIENDS OF PHOTOGRAPHY TO PROMOTE THE APPRECIATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN ART ESTABLISHED THE CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY IN TUSCON, AZ, WHICH HOUSES ALL OF ADAMS NEGATIVES, PRINTS, AND MEMORABILIA UP UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1984, LED WORKSHOPS IN YOSEMITE AND CARMEL.
ADAMS PROFOUNDLY INFLUENCED THE COURSE OF 20TH-CENTURY PHOTOGRAPHY THRU THE EXAMPLE OF HIS CLASSIC IMAGES, THRU HIS TECHNICAL SAVVY, AND BY THE FORCE OF HIS PERSONALITY.
ADAMS WAS INSPIRED BY THE WELL KNOWN NATURALIST AND PAINTER, GEORGIA O’KEEFE, WHO SPURRED HIS INTEREST IN PHOTOGRAPHY, BUT IT WAS THE WORK OF PAUL STRAND WHOSE CREATIVITIY AND DEDICATION LED ADAMS TO TURN HIS INTEREST INTO A COMMITMENT.
IN 1932, ADAMS WAS ONE OF SEVERAL YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS WHO FORMED A PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY CALLED “GROUP F.64”. THEIR WORK WAS DEDICATED TO THE “STRAIGHT APPROACH” OF PICTURE TAKING.
IN 1980 ADAMS RECEIVED THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM FOR “HIS EFFORTS TO PRESERVE THIS COUNTRY’S WILD AND SCENIC AREAS, BOTH ON FILM AND ON EARTH”.
MORE THAN ANY OTHER INFLUENTIAL AMERICAN OF HIS EPOCH, ADAMS BELIEVED IN BOTH THE POSSIBILITY AND THE PROBABLILITY OF HUMANKIND LIVING IN HARMONY AND BALANCE WITH ITS ENVIRONMENT.”
