History of the Canadian Flag • In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson proposed adopting a uniquely Canadian flag to replace the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack). In 1965 the maple leaf design by George F. G. Stanley and John Matheson was selected. The flag was first raised on February 15, 1965. We now celebrate February 15th as “Flag Day”. • At the inauguration ceremony of the new flag, the Speaker of the Senate (Maurice Bourget) said, "The flag is the symbol of the nation's unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief, or opinion."
Symbols of the Canadian Flag • The maple leaf has been a symbol of Canada since the 18th century. The flag contains a stylized 11 point red maple leaf in the center of the flag. • Throughout history, red and white are found as the colors of France or of England – both countries are significant in Canada’s heritage. • Red and white were approved as Canada's official colors in the proclamation of the royal arms of Canada in 1921 by King George V.
O’Canada • In Saint John, like all other towns and cities in New Brunswick, we sing our national anthem every morning before we begin classes. English classes sing in English and French Immersion classes sing our anthem in French. • To learn more about our national anthem, flag or listen to our national anthem in English and/or French, visit http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/ceem-cced/symbl/anthem-eng.cfm
