Ms. Brennan at a Glance: • Grew up outside of Philadelphia, PA • 2001- Attended Boston College • B.A. in Elementary Education & Communications • M.A. in Special Education • Taught 3rd grade in Boston for 7 years • 2012-Moved to VA • Received Certification for Educational Administration at George Washington • 2nd year at Hoffman- Boston Elementary

Why is 5th Grade So Important? • SOL Assessment- Heavy Year • Writing • Math • Reading • Science • Abundance of Privileges, Resources, & Responsibilities Made Available in APS & Hoffman Boston for our School Leaders! • Student Council • STEM Engineering Experts • Kindergarten Buddies • After School Programs • Last year of Elementary School! • Begin transition into Middle School • Students required to take more initiative, more independence, and more self-monitoring of their own learning

  7. Can you Describe Your Behavioral Expectations? • This year, Hoffman-Boston Elementary School has adopted a new behavior program school-wide. PBIS, which stands for Positive and Preventative Behavioral Interventions and Supports, seeks to identify and encourage students and teachers to display positive behavior and work to prevent unwanted behavior. • Our motto is ‘Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect your Surroundings.’ Consequences for unwanted behaviors include: • 1. Minor Incident Level 1: Verbal Reminder/Redirection by either a teacher or peer. Modeling of expected behaviors takes place. • 2. Minor Incident Level 2: Take A Break ( May be in or out of the classroom). Students will complete reflection form and teachers will complete and submit to administration a minor incident form. • 3. Major Incident Level 3: Student will be removed from the classroom and referred to the office. Reflection form will be completed, incident report submitted, parents will be contacted, and additional consequences may apply.

What Should I Expect to See During Homework Time? • APS Policy for Grade 5 states that homework should amount to a maximum of 60 minutes plus 30 minutes of reading nightly. • My personal homework philosophy is that homework should be a review of learned concepts and done independently by students as much as possible. I believe that the main focus of homework is improving responsibility and organizational skills, especially as fifth graders are off to middle school in one short year. • Homework should be a gateway from school to home, and hopefully will help you foster conversation with your child about what they are learning. • We have a Homework Incentive Chart in our classroom. For every 10 school days that students bring back 100% of their homework completed with their best effort shown, they will take home a homework pass which lets them skip one portion of their homework ( i.e. one worksheet, etc.). • Typical Week Would Like: • Monday- Reading Vocabulary, Math, Ind. Reading • Tuesday- Reading Vocabulary, Math, Ind. Reading • Wednesday- Word Study/Spelling, Math, Ind. Reading • Thursday- Word Study/Spelling, Read & Respond Journal, Math, Ind. Reading • Friday- Occasional Long Term Projects, Opportunity to Make Up assignments

  14. How Can I Support My Child in 5th Grade? • Fact Practice! Develop games, use timers, and practice multiplication & division facts nightly • Have conversations about what your child is reading. Have them read to you & discuss what comprehension skills they’re working on in class • Sign their agenda book once they’ve read for 30 minutes! • Assist your child with developing good study habits- planning ahead, organizing their time & space, keeping their agenda book neat & complete • Participate in Conferences, field trips, special events as best you can!

  15. How Will I Know How My Child Is Doing? • Keep in Touch! • 1st Round of Parent Conferences- October 10th & 11th • Bi Weekly 5th Grade Newsletters • Bi- Weekly Progress Reports • Go home every other Friday & should be signed & returned by the following Tuesday ( Begins 9/27/13)
