Welcome to “Bug” Week • Test scores, not terrible • Snack Bar reminder • Bug Day is Friday! • Use the laptops to get vocabulary and chart done • Lab (sketches) and Video coming up • www.cirrusimage.com
Insect Collection - Tuesday • 1. Grasshopper, cricket, roach, mantis • 2. true bug • 3. cicadas or leaf or plant hopper • 4. beetle • 5. fly • 6. ant, bee or wasp • 7. butterfly or moth • 8. dragonfly, lacewing, termite, flea, silverfish • 9. spider • 10. isopod, or centipede or millipede
Chitin Ecdysis Elytra Entomology Haltere Larva Instar Malpighian tubules Metamorphosis Nymph Ovipositor Pheromones Pupa Spiracles Tympanum Insect Vocabulary
Chitin – Material that makes up the exoskeleton. Ecdysis – correct term for molting/shedding of exoskeleton
Elytra front wings of beetles modified into wing cover.
Entomology • The study of insects
Instar • Each of the stages between molts.
Malpighian tubules • The excretory structures (“kidneys”) of the insect.
Metamorphosis • “Change in form” during growth. • Complete – • separate stages (larva, pupa) • More advanced • All the most successful orders have complete metamorphosis • Incomplete – young resemble adult
Nymph • Immature stage. Resembles the adult to some extent. A stage in incomplete metamorphosis.
Ovipositor • Egg laying structure (female only) • Becomes sting in bees and wasps
Pheromones • Chemical messages, like hormones but released into the environment. • Lock and key with receptors on the male antenna • 1 mile range!
Pupa • Transformation stage where the larva changes to an adult. • Special terms like cocoon or chrysalis
Spiracles • Openings to the breathing tubes (tracheae) which support respiration in insects.
Tympanum • The “ear” of the insect.
General Insect Characteristics • 3 body parts, head, thorax, abdomen • 6 legs, usually 2 pr. Wings - all from thorax • Exoskeleton of chitin • Breathe by spiracles/tracheae • Wide variety of mouthparts • Complete or incomplete metamorphosis • Estimates as high as 30 million species
Beetles - Coleoptera • Wings - 1st pr. modified into elytra • Allow beetles to go places other insects can’t • Mouthparts - chewing • Metamorphosis - complete - larva often called a grub • Other - largest order • Weevils, scarabs, mealworms, etc.
Butterflies - Lepidoptera • Wings - Scale covered • Mouthparts - Siphoning • Metamorphosis – Complete, larva called caterpillar • Butterflies – wings upright, antenna w/ nobs, narrow body, day active. • Moths – wings fold, feathery antenna, wide body, night active. • Other – a “skipper” has characteristics of both
Ants & Bees - Hymenoptera • Wings - 2 pr. Linked, membrane winged • Mouthparts - Chewing • Metamorphosis - Complete • Other - Social, solitary or parasites, 3rd largest • Narrow constriction between thorax and abdomen • Ovipositor modified into sting
Flies - Diptera • Wings - only 1 pr. 2nd pr - halteres, for balance • Mouthparts - lapping or biting • Metamorphosis - complete, larva are maggots or wigglers (mosquitos) • Other - disease carriers; 4th largest • Gnats, midges, punkies
Dragonflies - Odonata • Wings - 2 pair • Mouthparts - chewing • Metamorphosis - Incomplete, aquatic nymphs, rectal gills, jet propulsion • Other – predators, even as nymphs • Damselflies can fold wings against body, narrow abdomen • Legs form a basket underneath • Fossil dragonflies wingspan, 2 ½ feet.
Grasshoppers - Orthoptera • Wings - 2 pr - straight - 1st leathery • Mouthparts - Chewing • Metamorphosis - Incomplete • Other - roaches, mantids, grasshoppers, walking sticks, etc.
Termites - Isoptera • Wings - 2 pr. Straight if present • Mouthparts - chewing • Metamorphosis - Incomplete • Other - All social, flagellates are symbiotic • Castes include soldiers; 5,000,000 in a colony; huge part of tropical ecosystems; queen might live 50 years
True Bugs - Hemiptera • Wings - half-winged, front leathery, back membranous • Mouthparts - Piercing/sucking - beak • Metamorphosis - Incomplete • Other - plant parasites, predators
Cicadas - Homoptera • Wings - 2 pr, straight if present • Mouthparts - Piercing/sucking (plants) • Metamorphosis - Incomplete • Other – leaf and plant hoppers, 17 year cicada
Fleas - Siphonoptera • Wings - n/a • Mouthparts - Biting • Metamorphosis - Complete • Other - all parasites, flattened to move between hairs/feathers • Sense heat and jump to host.
