The Significance of Age of Onset? • Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are: • 6+ times more likely to meet the criteria for alcohol abuse and dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. 1 • AND2: • 12 times more likely to be unintentionally injured while under the influence of alcohol • 7 times more likely to be in a motor vehicle crash after drinking, and • 10 times more likely to have been in a physical fight after drinking • Results from the 2009 national Survey on Drug Use and health (2010) • Social and Health Consequences of Underage Drinking.
