Session Objectives • Know common input devices and what they are used for, • Know a range of common peripherals and what they are used for, • Understand the range of cards available to expand the capabilities of computers, • Understand the range of printers available and the features they have, • Know the types of monitor available and the properties they have.
Common Input Devices • Keyboard • Mouse • Microphone • Cameras • Joystick / Joy Pad • Scanner / OCR – Optical Character Recognition • OMR – Optical Mark Reader • Bar Code reader • How A Mouse Works Video
Common Cards • A computer card is slotted into either an ISA, PCI or AGP expansion slot, • They are used to expand (hence term expansion slot) the capabilities of computers, • Common cards include: • Network Card • Modem • TV / Radio Card • USB/Fire Wire Card • Sound Card • Video Card
Properties of Printers • When buying a computer printer you need to consider a number of properties before purchase: • Initial Price • Consumable Price • Quality of Printing (resolution) • Speed of Printing • Noise of Printing • Can Print In Colour • Can Print Multiple Copies • Can Do More Than One Job • Other Accessories Attached
Types of Printer • Dot Matrix Printer • Ink Jet Printer • Laser • Colour Laser • Plotter • How Printers Work Video
Properties of Monitors • Monitors or “visual display unit” (VDU) is a graphical form of computer output, • Like a printer, monitors have a number of different properties which relate to the quality of the monitor. • Visible Size • Resolution (bits) • Number of colours • Refresh rate (Hz) • Often the graphics card will determine the resolution, refresh rate and number of colours which can be displayed by a monitor.
Types of Monitor • CRT – Cathode Ray Tube • TFT – Thin Film Transistor • Projector
