Biomes Biomes and Water Biomes
Biome: • is a large group of ecosystems that share the same type of climax community. • They typically share similar climates as well.
Terrestrial Biomes • Biomes on land are called
Aquatic Biomes • Biomes located in oceans, lakes, streams, ponds, or other bodies of water are called.
Biomass • living material. • most biomass is made up of very small organisms, usually invisible to the human eye.
The Ocean Biome • is divided up into shallow, sunlight zones and deep, unlighted zones. • Made up of Marine Ecosystems • Intertidal Zones • Neritic Zones • Open Ocean
Inter-tidal zone: • the portion of the shoreline that lies between high and low tide lines. • Ocean tides: • caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon.
Neritic Zone • Below the low tide line, which extends over the continental shelf. • Sunlight passes through the shallow water of the neritic zone. • This zone is rich with living things. • Schools of fish • Algae • Coral reefs
Open Ocean • Made of a surface zone and a deep zone. • Surface zone gets sunlight • Deep zone is dark.
Photic zone: • The portion of the marine biome that is shallow enough for sunlight to penetrate. • Plankton • are microscopic organisms that float in the photic zone. (Plankton forms the base of all marine food chains)
Aphotic zone • The portion that is deep and never receives sunlight.
FRESHWATER BIOME • Lakes • Standing body of water • Animals adapt to still water
FRESHWATER BIOME • Ponds • Standing body of water • Animals adapt to still waters
FRESHWATER BIOME • Streams • Begin as snow melt on mountain tops. • Water is cold • Animals adapt strong currents • They have hooks or suckers to cling to rocks • Trout have stream lined bodies.
FRESHWATER BIOME • Rivers • As streams connect the current slows • Water is warmer and contains less oxygen • Plants have a better ability to take root near the rocks at the bottom.
Estuary: • is a coastal body of water, partially surrounded by land, in which fresh water and salt water mix. • Salinity: • the measure of salt in water.
