American Muslims After 9/11 • All over the world especially Muslims living in America have been stereotyped as terrorist and extremist. • Through American media Islam has been portrayed as a violent religion. • Most of Americans little or nothing about Islam, they have misconception about Muslim beliefs. • More than a decade after the 9/11 terrorist attack, discrimination is still affecting the everyday lives of Muslims.
About Islam • Like Judaism, Christianity, Islam is a monotheistic religion. • Muslims believe that the Quran, the last revealed word of God and was revealed to prophet Muhammad. • Muslims seek guidance through the teachings in the Quran. • Islam is religion of tolerance, not of violence. • It promotes peace.
Islam in USA The estimated 5-7 million Muslims in the USA include both immigrants and those born in America.(www.pbs.org)

What is Jihad? • Jihad is often mistakenly described as “holy war”. • It is one of the most important teaching of Islam. • Jihad literally means to strive or to struggle. • It is clearly mentioned in Quran, “fight in the cause of God those who fight with you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors (Quran, 2: 190)”. • Terrorism is not jihad.
The value of Innocent life in Quran • whosever kills a human being for other manslaughter or mischief in the land, it shall be as if he has killed all humankind, and whosever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he has saved the life of all humankind (Quran, 5:32)”.
Conclusion • Don’t believe all you see and hear….think yourself. • It is better to understand Islam. • Let inter faith dialogue be encouraged.
