  1. WORLD LITERATURESEPTEMBER 13, 2012 Let’s continue to review yesterday’s warm-up: Warm-up: In today’s world we are VERY familiar with heroes. Think back upon a hero that you know of (Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Ninja Turtles, Hercules, Aladdin, the Hulk, etc.) 1. What types of characteristics do heroes usually have? (i.e. what character traits do we admire that make them heroes?) 2. What values should a hero have, in your opinion?

  2. REMINDERS • Always write in pen.  • Homework: • Continue to define the Key Terms for first semester study guide • Check your grade on Infinite Campus! • Late/missing work from August will not be accepted after Monday.

  4. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • Turn to pages 32 and 33 of your World Literature textbooks. • Volunteers to read?

  5. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • Turn to page 25 of your Interactive Reader. • Homework: Complete the “Words to Know SkillBuilder” exercise– parts A and B. • Due Monday. • Write down homework in your planner!

  6. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • The hero Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, is “two-thirds a god, one-third a man.” • In this epic, we see him exploring both sides of his character.

  7. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • Gilgamesh is first presented as a superhuman ruler who has let his power go to his head. • He has begun taking advantage of his subjects rather than taking care of them.

  8. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • The gods hear the people’s complaints and create Enkidu, a “hairy-bodied wild man” equal in strength to Gilgamesh to fight him. • Instead of fighting, however, Enkidu and Gilgamesh become best friends. • Together, they fight and defeat Humbaba, a monster created by the gods to guard a sacred grove.

  9. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • After the victory, the goddess Ishtar falls in love with Gilgamesh. • When he rejects her, she has her father, Anu, send the Bull of Heaven to punish him. • Together, Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the bull.

  10. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH • For this, and other offenses, the gods order that, one of the two heroes must die. • Enkidu, who is not part god, is chosen. • Before he dies, Enkidu has a dream of what waits for him in the afterlife…

  11. THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH Turn to page 4 of your Interactive Reader. We’re going to start reading The Epic of Gilgamesh. As we read, complete the annotations suggested in the margins. Volunteers to read?
