Health Choices Vocabulary • Health:freedom from physical disease • Wellness:maximum well-being • Life Management Skills: skills that allow person to be well and enjoy life • Lifestyle Choices: daily choices on how to treat body and mind • Lifestyle Disease: diseases made likely by neglect of body

Leading Causes of Death 1890’s • Flu • Pneumonia • Tuberculosis • Bronchitis • Stroke Cause: Germs/Bacteria NO 1 cause of death for Teenagers: Accidents • 1990’s • Heart Disease • Cancer • Suicide • Diabetes • HIV Infection Cause: Choices make in life Why Accidents? Teenagers act off of impulse, irrational Smoking: Lung Cancer

Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Health • Maintains a strong sense of self • Willing to accept new ideas • Handles setbacks without a loss of self esteem • Aware of emotions & healthy expressions • Seeks help when needed • Feels that life has meaning • Lives by cherished values • Successfully manages stress

  10. Physical Health • Gets enough sleep • Uses food to get nutritional needs • Maintains appropriate weight • Works to achieve physical fitness • Does not abuse drugs • Takes preventative measures • Aware of infectious diseases • Knows disease risks and measures to take

  11. Social Health • Develops supportive relationships • Effectively resolves conflicts • Socializes well with others without the influence of drugs or alcohol • Understands the risks of STD’s and pregnancy and will take responsibility • Continues to grow and learn and face new challenges

Focus Activity • Choose 1 and be able to explain why: • Work every weekend for a year and get two free years of college • Work every day after school and weekends for a month and get $1000 added to paycheck • Pay $5 a week and get $100 • Work 10 hours a week for 1 year and have a chance at winning a 4 year scholarship

Making Behavior Changes • Motivation is shaped by 4 factors: • The Value of the reward • How big is the reward? • Its Timing • How soon will the reward come or how soon will the price have to be paid? • The Costs • What is the risks or consequences? • Its Probability • How certain is the reward?

  16. 6 Steps to Goal Setting • Identify (the change) • 3 behaviors that will attain the goal • Preparation • Commitment (Time) • How will you Measure Progress • Reward
