Objectives: • Students will relate everyday eating habits to proper nutrition, primarily focusing on “Fat”. • Several times, students will be placed into groups and teams to discuss and recognize nutrition food labels. • The teacher will demonstrate to the students how to properly read and calculate total fat and % daily value on a given product. • Students will apply what they have learned from the teacher and will practice in groups on their own. • Students will compare and contrast estimated results to actual results. • Students will organize into teams and develop their own “fat-healthy” diets. • Students will evaluate their “fat-healthy” diets using concrete facts and calculations.
Monday • Students will get into groups of 3 or 4 and be asked to estimate the total fat content of a “Big Mac” • After the students have estimated they will record their answers on the board • Teacher will hand out actual nutrition fact-sheet from McDonald’s allowing students to compare actual and estimated results

Thursday • Using the knowledge gained from the three previous days’ exercises, students will be again broken up into groups of 3 or 4 and will be in charge of running their own food information station [there will be 6 or 7 of these in total].
Friday • Students will assemble in 5 teams to formulate and evaluate a “fat-healthy” diet using the foods and information from Thursday’s exercise.
Evaluation • Students will be evaluated on how well they estimate, compare, and calculate with their experiments throughout the week and with their final “fat-healthy” diets.
