Saskatchewan’s Challenges & Opportunities • Canadian Decision to Implement Kyoto Protocol • National Target of 6 per cent cumulative reduction from 1990 Emission Levels during 2008 - 2012 period • Saskatchewan economy carbon intensive: coal dependent electricity generation; energy intensive resources; manufacturing; and, agricultural sectors • Opportunity for innovation and technology

  3. Saskatchewan Initiatives • International Energy Agency (IEA) Weyburn CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project • International Test Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture

  4. Weyburn Project • 4 year $40 million research project for geo-sequestration and storage of carbon dioxide • Operated in conjunction with $1 billion EnCana CO2 enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project in Weyburn oilfield • Funding support by IEA, NRCan and US DOE • Project launched by Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) in Regina, Saskatchewan

Weyburn Project • First project step requires mapping pre-existing fluids in oilfield formation: - baseline seismic surveys completed fall 2000 - baseline data on groundwater and reservoir fluids collected fall 2000 - regional geology mapping initiated 2001 • Second step is monitoring incremental oil production and long term storage

Weyburn Project • 2002 is midpoint of 4 year IEA Monitoring Project: - 36 bcf (billion cubic feet) CO2 injected - CO2 shipped 320 km from Dakota Gasification Company’s plant at Beulah, ND • Incremental oil production of 4500 bpd (barrels per day) over base of 21,000 bpd • Early results identify areas of CO2 injection • Long term CO2 storage results to be determined

  7. International Test Centre (ITC) • ITC is Univ. of Regina research group • Focus is amine-based technologies to capture CO2 from flue gases • First phase is lab scale amine testing • Next phase is testing amines in lignite power plant in Estevan, Saskatchewan • Funding being provided by Governments of Saskatchewan and Canada
