Tropical Ecology 2010 Tropical Ecology (BIO-341): on-campus during Spring semester Field Studies in Tropical Ecology (BIO-342): Costa Rica May Experience
Academic issues • Program includes a two-credit course in spring term and a two-credit study-away in Costa Rica during May Experience. • Lectures, lab, and an exam in spring. • Tests, reports, and projects during the trip. • Courses count toward • Biology major • Latin-American Studies concentration • Environmental Studies concentration • See informational flyer for more details.
Who should apply? • Ideal course for anyone studying ecology, conservation, or environmental sciences. (But the only pre-requisite is a biology course) • You should have a genuine curiosity about the natural world. • You should be enthusiastic about field study under conditions that can sometimes be primitive or uncomfortable. • A wide range of students including pre-meds and non-scientists have gone this trip and enjoyed it.
What does it cost? • No extra charge for tuition. • Travel charges for spring study-away are currently estimated at $3500, but may be less depending on air fare. • This includes: • Air and Ground Transportation • Lodging • Meals • Entrance fees • Taxes Everything except the souvenirs

Application Process • Compared to other May-X courses, applications are due much earlier, so you can also enroll in the spring-semester course on campus. • Formal application will occur in fall. • Apply through “Horizons” on Study-Away website. • Due by Fall Break. • If interested, please complete the brief “pre-application” form NOW. • http://eweb.furman.edu/~pollard/costarica
