  1. Analysis and Presentation of Signal Jamming Effectiveness Brandon Vargo TJHSST Computer Systems Laboratory Northrop Grumman

  2. Objective The purpose of this project is to allow a user to evaluate the effectiveness of signal jamming devices placed in a particular region. Given the locations and characteristics of a set of signal jammers in addition to data about the surrounding region, a user should be able to easily identify areas protected by the jamming devices and non-protected areas.

  3. What is Signal Jamming? • The transmission of radio signals that interfere with other signals. • Decrease in the signal to noise ratio of the target signal. • Usually intentional.

  4. How Signal Jamming Works • Signal to Jamming and Noise Ratio (SJNR) • From SJNR, calculate bit error rate and packet error rate (BER and PER). As the signal to noise ratio of the target signal decreases, the error rates increase. • If the BER / PER are great enough, the usefulness of the target signal is greatly reduced or eliminated completely.

  5. Calculating Jamming Effectiveness • Path loss algorithm • Free space path loss • Path loss exponent changes with terrain type • Line of sight • Signals are attenuated or blocked by obstacles • Calculate path loss and line of sight in the worst case scenario for target transmitters and jammers. • Calculate SJNR, BER, and PER.

  6. Elements of Presentation • Colored display overlaid on a 3D globe indicates jamming effectiveness in the worst-possible scenario. • Map contains points representing jammer locations.

  7. NASA World Wind • Open source virtual globe created by NASA. • Catalog system contains multiple datasets, each of which is contained within a separate data layer. • Java SDK allows for easy extension and integration by developers. • Custom layers are easy to create and overlay on top of the 3D globe.

  8. NASA World Wind – Globe View

  9. NASA World Wind – 3D Terrain

  10. Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) • Development platform • Core Platform • Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT) • JFace – UI toolkit built on top of SWT • Eclipse workbench • Equinox OSGi standard bundling framework • Applications consist of one or more plugins and/or features that build on top of the Eclipse RCP

  11. Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) • NASA World Wind already implemented as an Eclipse RCP plugin. • Signal jamming display is implemented as a plugin that uses features made available by existing plugins, including World Wind. • Code re-use / less custom code • Generic framework could allow other mapping frameworks to be used instead of World Wind. • Future expansion flexability
