  3. Over Soul To comprehend the Universe, God, the Divine… You must TRANSCEND your physical & emotional being.

  4. Write in the Chat Box Transcendentalists believe that individuals "transcend" by learning from and living in harmony with nature. Thoreau put this philosophy into practice by living alone in a cabin he built himself at Walden Pond for two years (1845 -1847). Thoreau's experiences during this period provided him with the material for his masterwork Walden (1854). The quote below is from Walden. Describe two specific things Thoreau learned about life by translating the lines below in your own words; write your answers in the Chat Box: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.... I wanted to live deeply and suck out all the marrow of life." (Walden)

  5. To Transcend is to…. Know that at their core, all people are basically good. Believe that all human beings can rise above where they are to a higher place. Understand that humans excel because of their minds not because of their bodies. Allow nature to be a living teacher of excellence & live in harmony with nature. Value your true soul and follow your soul’s lead without yielding to the will of others.

At some point in your life, you must… • Accept yourself for who you are. • Rely on your own thoughts and ideas instead of following the majority. • Stop being afraid of being misunderstood. • Start doing ordinary things in a new and different way. • Think for yourself. • See life through the eyes of your soul. “There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse…” Emerson -Self Reliance

  7. Thoreau’s ideas still live on… Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" became Gandhi's textbook during his passive resistance in India. Martin Luther King, Jr. was greatly influenced by the writing and philosophy of Thoreau.

  8. "That government is best which governs least" “The best government is one with severely limited powers. It should use its powers only to carry out moral and ethical activities on behalf of the citizens. Unfortunately, factions of powerful self-interest groups sometimes manipulate the government into carrying out actions that offend the conscience of upright citizens.” The Cummings Study Guides.  • Does Thoreau reject government and being governed? • Does Thoreau want government to have less control thereby forcing the common man to exercise greater control of his life? • What are the benefits/consequences of either?

  9. “That government is best which governs least” Agreeing with Thoreau: Give specific support for limit government. Disagreeing with Thoreau: Give specific support for strong government.

  10. Letter to the Editor • Based on what Thoreau said, write a letter to your editor agreeing or disagreeing with him. • Explain using specific examples (hypothetical or historical), why you agree or disagree with him. • Remember, you are writing to persuade your readers; you are seeking to convince your readers about a matter of opinion. This writing is sometimes called argumentative because it argues a position. Persuasive writing focuses on the reader, whom the writer wants to influence.

  18. 3.04 Part B Sound off reporters, it is time to hear your opinion! Respond to the following statement and post your responses in the chat area. Once you have responded, respond to someone else’s comments. In a few complete sentences, respond to the following statement by Douglas: “He only can understand the deep satisfaction which I experienced, who has himself repelled by force the bloody arm of slavery.” In other words, is it true that only a “deep satisfaction” or better yet, a true understanding can come from actually going through something as horrific as slavery, or do you think that through reading about someone as brave and great as Douglass brings us insight? For this assignment you will need to copy our conversation in the chat area and paste it into assessment 3.04B.
